Description:
Kent: Unpublished Manuscript, 1829. Mock epic narrative poem describing an ill-fated journey by boat, stage-coach and on foot from Sheerness to a concert in Chatham and the 'inconsideration' that blighted their return journey. Thin, maroon-coloured roan covered wrappers, rubbing to spine and corners; white tape reinforcement along gutter to verso of wrapper. 18 pages of text, 21 lines per page, c2600 words. Text block sewing intact but detached from binding. Featherstone addressed the poem to his travelling companion Henry Senior (1794-1861, son of John Raven Senior of Compton Beauchamp, Berks and Mary, daughter of Henry Duke; Ensign to the 60th Regiment, Royal Americans, in 1813, and later served with several other regiments) recalling one year on: 'Dear Friend... in a poet's dress/ Our midnight ramble to Sheerness...' in the company also of William Wood. Featherstone writes in easily digestible free verse about the inspiration for the trip coming from yet a further friend, Wlliam Moore, whose… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Lion Publishing plc, 1990. The Biblical story of The Tower of Babel retold for children. The first hardback edition of this Lion picture story book, signed to the front pastedown by the author and illustrator John Ryan beneath a cartoon sketch in pen of the book's heroine, Mabel the king's daughter. Fine in glossy illustrated covers showing only minor signs of handling. John Ryan (1921 – 2009) was a British animator and cartoonist, best remembered for his character Captain Pugwash which began as a comic strip which spawned books and a TV series which was animated by Ryan in real time using a system of cut-out characters and boats, moved by hidden cardboard levers. We have acquired several of these animation models alongside Pugwash artwork and books at a recent sale of items from Ryan's estate. Manuscript essays, letters and journal entries by a member of the first intake to 'the mother of women's colleges' - Elmira College - one of the world's first women's higher education colleges to award degrees. Maggie Bush has used a lined quarto sized notebook bound in quarter black roan over black straight grain cloth, chipping to the spine but structurally sound.. On the first leaf she has written 'M. Bush. College - Maggie E Bush, Elmira College, November 28th 1855' - just a month after the College's foundation. The manuscript records in journal form Maggie's experience of a lecture by Henry Ward Beecher, her witty essays on subjects such as 'Latin. Why are we thus toiling to gain an object that is impossible?' and finally a series of pages used as a liber amicorum for Elmira College friends. After giving her name and address at Elmira the first manuscript page is a dedicatory poem for this book followed by a sequence of original… Read More
