Roberts was one of Britain's most famous generals of his time -of imperial expansion. He was particularly active in the Afghan wars and when knighted took the title of Roberts of Kandahar. His march from Kabul to Kandahar will long be cited as a remarkable feat of both strategy and administration. In the Indian Mutiny, he won the V.C. for repeated acts of heroism. This book was written in his lifetime and is a genuine first edition. WorldCat show only one copy in libraries--at the Bibliotheque Nationale i Paris, I grade the book near fine, although for its age, this book is INCREDIBLY FINE. It is bound in half (or is quarter) -leather with gilt titling on ribbed spine. Marbled boards and marbled end pages. Full title: Le Mariage de Mon Grand-Pere suivi du Testament du Juif. It is in French, translated from English. Published by the highly respected publisher Hachete in 1854, it make no reference to author or translator. 142 pages.

Kanda Memorial Committee Memorials of naibu kanda Tokyo: tokyo-shoin 1927. This book looks BRAND NEW AND BRIGHT although perhaps because it is thick with 525 pages the front board to fep join is roughened for part of its length so that we see the webbing-but that does not weaken the binding. Even though it is a 1927 first edition, it has a dust jacket that has just a nick at top and is a remarkable survivor. Tissue-proteced frontis in fine condition The book has no writing, no bumps. A few illustrations, all like new. Some toning. By far the best condition avalaiabale on the net today. Naibu Kanda lived 1857-1923. The coming of Perry's "black ships' was a turning point for the Japanese and in particular for the author second Baron Kanda. Scholar, statesman, member House of Peers, founder of Tokyo University of Commerce. 516 pages plus prelims. Some slight evidence of toning of pages but book is unmarked. Author (Biographical Note Author) John Forsyth, Provincial Archivist, signed this book on September 18, 1923 as a gift to Mr. Henderson (a local.) But for the signature, I would grade the book Fine or NEAR FINe with gentle paper toning. My copy is in hard cover with bevelled edges. This is a Tai Pei reproduction of the 1898 edition. Both volumes are about fine although one corner rubbed and both volumes with ownership stamp on fep. 836 + 776 pages. Vast number of illustrations all impeccable as are foldouts. In back pocket is an enormous fold-out map of the empire; map in impeccable new condition (includes Tibet as colonial part of empire.)

Full of tables, pictures and pull-outs in perfect pristine condition. 583 pages on quality paper and all like new BUT the name of the military unit to whom it was issued appears as two stamps - one inside cover and one on title page. In all other respects like new

Pamphlet No. 1 Large Box Girder Bridge 1932. At top of front is written C.S.M. E.H. Lawrence. The Imperial War Museum in London has a copy, but I cannot find one anywhere else.8 tables and 16 plates all present. Table H on page 35 occupies only half a page and a part of the blank area has been excised. Nothing is missing on 35 or the verso 36. More importantly, fold-out Plate 16 is torn in half with both halves present.

NOTE THIS IS THE FIRST EDITION, PUBLISHED 1911, WITH THE FRONT BOARD AND FRONTIS BOTH BEARING THE COLORED PICTURE OF A RICKSHA IN CEYLON. Bella Sidney Woolf, sister of author Sidney Woolf, wrote the book whilst living Peradeniya, near Kandy, in Ceylon, as shown in her foreword dated 1911. Duckworth published it in 1911 but did not put a date in the book. A search of WoldCat shows only 2 copies in UK national libraries), 1 in New Zealand, (national library) and 1( U Toronto) in Canada. It went well and was republished in 1913, again without a date but with a different binding. That second edition is much more easily found.
This copy that I offer (131 p) is graded at the top end of good with all 8 color plates and 8 b/w plates present, but one loose. Names on blank fep. Color-illustrated front board (same pic as frontis).
