[Pulp] Kerouac, Jack. Maggie Cassidy. New York: Avon Books, 1959. First Edition, 1st Avon Paperback printing. 189 pages. Octavo. Mass market paperback with vibrantly illustrated covers capturing a young couple in love. Maggie Cassidy is a novel by the American writer Jack Kerouac, first published in 1959. It is a largely autobiographical work about Kerouac's early life in Lowell, Massachusetts, from 1938 to 1939, and chronicles his real-life relationship with his teenage sweetheart Mary Carney. The original manuscript published by Avon Books in 1959 was almost immediately pulled from the shelves due to objections over profanity in one particular passage. The passage was rewritten and the book redistributed even though Kerouac reportedly objected to the changes. Jack Kerouac's books and poems have often been referred to as the catalyst for the 1960 counterculture revolution. Roughly 50 pages are unbound from the spine, spine is chipped, and has two 1 inch tears. Some pages have red pen annotations.…

Gerrish argues against the separate arraignment of prostitutes and brothel owners and lists the reasons why previous attempts at suppression have failed,"There are two principal reasons why attempts at suppression have always failed," he writes. "A lack of a supporting moral sentiment in the community, without which the efforts of the police can never succeed; and the fact that women only are attacked, as…

Full blue cloth binding, with white lettering on spine and "12401" stamped in white at the lower right corner of the rear cover. Original dust jacket. Jane Addams & Emily Balch. Full text of the Manifesto Issued by Envoys of the International Congress of Women at the Hague to the Governments of Europe and the President of the United States. New York, 1915. One page. 8.5"x10". In the midst of the First World War, Envoys of the International Congress of Women wrote this manifesto to address those in power and argue for peace, an act that nearly destroyed Jane Addams' reputation, though she was later recognized for her pacifism and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. PRICE Addams initially gained fame for her social work in Chicago and for founding the Hull-House, some calling her the only American saint. Her outspoken pacifism during the First World War nearly destroyed her reputation. She would be recognized for her work toward peace in 1931, when she became the second woman to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize. Addams was a mentor to Emily Balch, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for her work as a leader of the pacifist movement throughout the…

The mapmaker is Girolamo Ruscelli who created an original version based on the 1548 map designed by famed Italian cartographer, Giacomo Gastaldi (Al Ankary). The map serves as the first modern illustration of the Arabian Peninsula, which, for the first time, delineates Baharam [Bahrain], Aba [Abu Dhabi] and Qatar, whose formation is clearly shown. This map was printed in Venice in 1561. Harper surgically goes through the points laid out by Meyer which generally center on the the claim that suffrage will extinguish traditional femininity, and rebukes them. She is conscious of the transitional era that she exists in, and considers suffrage to be an essential issue at heart of the the social and technological transformations taking place at the turn of the century: "Whether the suffrage would be a benefit to woman must be considered, not with reference to the women of the past, but with reference to those of the present and the future - women who are rapidly becoming equal factors with men…
