Zurich: Buchergilde Gutenberg, 1950. First edition of his last book. Second issue with translator's name on verso of title page [Treverton 927(2)]. German text. Made into a 1960 supernatural drama film directed by Roberto Gavaldon -- the first Mexican film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Spine ends a little pushed in and edges lightly rubbed otherwise near fine. Lacking a dust jacket, if issued in one.

(Vancouver): Tanks, (1986). First edition. Published by the inimitable Bill Hoffer, the first in his series of books published "in objection to the continued creation of State Literature through government subsidies to the Arts." The whole series was re-issued the following year in a boxed, signed, "subscriber's edition" as "Tanks Are a Mighty Fine Thing." Fine in stapled, pictorial paperwraps.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. Fourth printing of the first edition (originally published in 1918). Illustrated with three full-page drawings by Gibran. Good or better with several pages roughly opened resulting in chipping to margins, occasional finger smudge, and gilt at spine perished but covers crisp and bright. Gift inscription to Charles "Sasha" Zimmerman, a socialist activist and trade union leader, from his brother Israel on half-title page quoting George Bernard Shaw, "To Sasha -- / In heaven an/ angel is nobody/ in particular./ Is./ Nov. 1926." Although not denoted as such in the book, from the collection of Charles's son, the sports writer Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman. Increasingly scarce early printing.

Frederick-Town, MD: no-publ., 1805. First edition. An abstract of Maryland laws of the period "Interspersed with a Variety of Practical Forms and Precedents; For the use of Justices of the Peace and Others." 352 pages plus index. Interior somewhat darkened with some staining but wholly legible. Original leather binding touched up with new, period-style leather spine label reproducing the original. Good or better.

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1867. Reprinted, by order of The Secretary of the Navy. Papers and documents by Poisson, G. B. Airy, Archibald Smith, Frederick John Evans and W. W. Rundell. Illustrated with charts and diagrams, some folding. Half brown leather over marbled boards, raised bands, six spine compartments stamped within in black and gilt, marbled page edges. About very good with name and date on front endpaper, edges and spine rubbed, boards visible at tips, quarter-sized chip from marbled paper on rear cover, and moderate darkening and marginal staining up to page 17 but remaining text bright and clean (appears to be printed on different paper).

[Washington]: [No-publisher], 1852. First edition. DISBOUND. Executive Document Number 91 petitioning Congress for an increase in subsidies for the Collins Lines, an American steamship company, to transport mail "between New York and Liverpool, between New York and New Orleans, Havana and Chagres, and between Panama and San Francisco and some port in Oregon." 195 pages total including 85 pages of appendices; illustrated with tables, both full page and in the text. Faint staining to margins and light corner crease to first several leaves, light nicking to fore edge front leaf; otherwise, pages are clean and free from noticeable wear. Evidence of former binding at spine - remnants of blue paper and old leather, as well as grooves where signatures where previously sewn together.

(Tampa: Norman Mailer Society, 2007). First edition. The inaugural issue. Edited by Phillip Sipiora. Number 39 of 40 copies SIGNED BY MAILER AND SIPIORA. There were an additional 16 copies for presentation. Includes two first book appearances: his tribute to friend Robert Lucid and an excerpt from his unpublished play "The Naked and the Dead." Also includes pieces on Mailer by William Kennedy, Robert Lucid, Michael Lennon. Donald Kaufman, et al. 267 pages. 8vo., green cloth boards stamped in silver on spine. Fine. Issued without dust jacket.

Small 4to illustrated cloth boards; type handset in 18-pt Baskerville and printed on Rives mould-made paper. The "Ellor-gast" of the title was printed in 1986 in an edition of 40 with 8 aquatints and 8 translations of Old English poetry exploring the theme of the monster in Beowulf. This book prints Jones's speech on the making of that book for the Williamsburg Bibliophiles delivered at The Bookpress Ltd. Fine. Issued without a dust jacket.

A good, tight copy with flaking to cloth on boards and gutters due to old insect damage but spine relatively unscathed, small nick to front cover fore edge, name on front endpaper, few small creases and smudges to pages.

[San Franciso]: North Point Press, circa 1984. First edition. 18.75 x 24.75" broadside poster advertising the availability of the trade edition issued from the Arion Press limited edition (published the previous year). Both editions were illustrated with period photographs of sites in the novel. The poster prominently features a film-noirish black-and-white photo of San Francisco's Stockton Street Tunnel -- outside of which is where Sam Spade first sees his murdered partner, Miles Archer. There's also a quote painting the scene from the book printed beneath the photo. Near fine with touch of faint soiling and few tiny edge creases. Scarce.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1987. First edition of AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. Fine in dust jacket with minimal edgewear but yellow faded to white on spine, although red lettering still good.

INSCRIBED BY LEE on the title page, "For -- With friendship, admiration and a woeful lack of cleverness! Bob Lee 8 Apr 67." A "Random House Play" illustrated with photographs of the stage production starring Angela Lansbury. Fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket with very light soiling and red spine a bit faded. This one is from "The Stone House Book & Gift Shop" in Woonsocket, R.I. where fiction rates were 5 cents a day (or 15 cents a week). Library and book number labels on front endpaper and the portions with book and author details from the front and back flaps of dust jacket affixed to front and back pastedowns respectively. Spine a little mottled and few small stains to top edge, otherwise very good lacking dust jacket.

Edited and with introduction by Ellery Queen. Perfect bound multi-colored paperwraps; 128 pages. Covers show light soiling, edge rubbing and shallow chip from top rear corner, pages age darkened, otherwise very good.

London: Hutchinson & Co, (1951). Diana Younger. First edition. INSCRIBED on title page, "For Diana and Went / With the fondest love from Dennis." Diana Younger was Dennis's stepdaughter and they remained close all his life. She illustrated the dust jacket for his 1938 book, THE GOLDEN SPANIARD as well as endpapers for several others. Very good with a little discoloration at bottom of the black cloth spine (where section of jacket is missing--otherwise the book would be near fine); in bright but good-only dust jacket due to a large chip at bottom of spine extending a little to rear panel.
