Good or better with several pages roughly opened resulting in chipping to margins, occasional finger smudge, and gilt at spine perished but covers crisp and bright. Gift inscription to Charles "Sasha" Zimmerman, a socialist activist and trade union leader, from his brother Israel on half-title page quoting George Bernard Shaw, "To Sasha -- / In heaven an/ angel is nobody/ in particular./ Is./ Nov. 1926." Although not denoted as such in the book, from the collection of Charles's son, the sports writer Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman. Increasingly scarce early printing.

Illustrated with charts and diagrams, some folding. Half brown leather over marbled boards, raised bands, six spine compartments stamped within in black and gilt, marbled page edges. About very good with name and date on front endpaper, edges and spine rubbed, boards visible at tips, quarter-sized chip from marbled paper on rear cover, and moderate darkening and marginal staining up to page 17 but remaining text bright and clean (appears to be printed on different paper).

Executive Document Number 91 petitioning Congress for an increase in subsidies for the Collins Lines, an American steamship company, to transport mail "between New York and Liverpool, between New York and New Orleans, Havana and Chagres, and between Panama and San Francisco and some port in Oregon." 195 pages total including 85 pages of appendices; illustrated with tables, both full page and in the text. Faint staining to margins and light corner crease to first several leaves, light nicking to fore edge front leaf; otherwise, pages are clean and free from noticeable wear. Evidence of former binding at spine - remnants of blue paper and old leather, as well as grooves where signatures where previously sewn together.

First edition. 18.75 x 24.75" broadside poster advertising the availability of the trade edition issued from the Arion Press limited edition (published the previous year). Both editions were illustrated with period photographs of sites in the novel. The poster prominently features a film-noirish black-and-white photo of San Francisco's Stockton Street Tunnel -- outside of which is where Sam Spade first sees his murdered partner, Miles Archer. There's also a quote painting the scene from the book printed beneath the photo. Near fine with touch of faint soiling and few tiny edge creases. Scarce.

"Circulating Library" copy, from the days when public libraries were not as plentiful and circulating libraries, which charged a fee, were known to stock popular novels the library might not. This one is from "The Stone House Book & Gift Shop" in Woonsocket, R.I. where fiction rates were 5 cents a day (or 15 cents a week). Library and book number labels on front endpaper and the portions with book and author details from the front and back flaps of dust jacket affixed to front and back pastedowns respectively. Spine a little mottled and few small stains to top edge, otherwise very good lacking dust jacket.
