Very good set of Catlin's classic account of his travels and sojourns with the Native American peoples from 1832-1839.Second edition with colour illustrations featuring 312 full-colour engravings on 180 plates (not the "400 Coloured Plates" described on the title page and spines). Includes three maps in colour.The illustrations show portraits of chiefs, warriors, medicine men and women, buffalo and horse hunts, rituals, religious ceremonies, dances, war games, sports, etc. The Native American peoples described include Choctaw, Blackfoot, Ojibwe, Comanche, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Sioux, Seminole, etc. There are several self-portraits of Catlin (Frontispiece, Plates 62 and 132). Woodblock reprint of two famous Japanese picture scrolls which recorded the unsuccessful Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.The scrolls were originally drawn between 1275 and 1293 for the samurai Suenaga Takezaki to record his battlefield valor and deeds during Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan. The scrolls depict the Battle of Bun'ei in 1274 and the Battle of Koan in 1281.
