Cheffetz, Asa. Cheffetz, Asa. M. STEWART SIMPSON, 1919. Springfield catalogue, page 14. Etching, 1919. Titled, signed and dated in the plate. 6 7/8 x 4 7/8 inches, 175 x 123 mm. In excellent condition. One of only a few etchings made by Cheffetz, this one likely comes from the artist's own collection. Maxwell Stewart Simpson (1896-1984) was Cheffetz's classmate at the National Academy of Design. The two shared a studio in New York in 1919, near Union Square, where they made etchings and lithographs; Cheffetz was forced by circumstances to return to Springfield after only six months. Simpson had a long and distinguished career as a painter, printmaker and sculptor; see the entry on him in Who Was Who in American Art.

Helleu, Paul Cesar (French 1859-1927). MADAME ANLIS AVEC MANCHON ASSISE. Drypoint, not dated (but c. 1900). Signed in pencil, lower right. Edition size not known. 21 1/8 x 13 1/8, plus margins. Framed in a hand-carved 22 carat gold-leafed frame by Guido of Boston, and titled "The Little Duchess" on a brass plate at the bottom of the frame. A few small spots of foxing, else a striking image in very good condition.

Hanff/Greene p. 74. A printing subsequent to State 3; no publishers advertisements, but plates tipped-in, as in the early states, rather than bound-in. There is a 1"x1/2" scraped area on the pastedown, and some very light wear to the corners, else a very good copy.

Hanff/Greene p. 74. A printing subsequent to State 3; no publishers advertisements, but plates tipped-in, as in the early states, rather than bound-in. Pastedown margins lightly worn, a few stains on the rear cover, a small hole in the margin of the half-title, but still a very clean, fresh and attractive copy.

Blue cloth stamped in navy & white, color pastedown cover illustration, colored endpapers, 236pp, 12 color illustrations by Frank Verbeck. First Edition, but not a first state (Braunworth imprint is in unserifed type, and on back of copyright, rather than title page, numeral appears on page 50, and caption on p. 121 is undamaged). There is a 1913 owners inscription. Cover faded and rubbed, minor restoration to endpapers.

With Lear's signature in the plate, and with the title and the names of Lear and Hullmandel, the publisher, printed in the margin below the image. Framed elaborately, and with a window on the verso to show the accompanying textual material. In excellent condition.

The original preparatory drawing, the copper plate and the Bon a Tirer proof of the print, the first two unique, the last an edition of 40, signed in pencil. A few spots to the surface of the plate, else all in excellent condition. An extraordinary item comprising the three stages in the creation of this print. The print has never come to auction, nor have we found any copies for sale.

Gerchman, Reubens (Brazilian, 1942-2008). "MAIS CAFE MAIS BRASIL" and "CAFE E ALEGRIA NUMA XICARDA." (MORE COFFEE; MORE BRAZIL and COFFEE AND JOY IN A CUP). Collages of colored papers mounted to heavy cardboard, 1969. Each identified and signed and dated by Gerchman on the verso. Each 44 x 30 inches. Both in very good condition, except for tack holes and wear at the corners. Very strong graphic designs promoting Brazil's most famous product. Reubens Gerchman, Brazilian, 1942-2008, was a painter and sculptor associated with Pop Art. Collage was a medium in which he worked, but his themes usually related to isolation and alienation. This suggests that these coffee pieces may have been a commerical project, possibly intended to be produced as posters.

African Sculpture. MAKONDE SHETANI FIGURE. Tanzania, c. 1950s-60s. Pau-Rosa wood 11 3/4 inches high, on an integral rectangular wood base 8 x 6 1/4 inches. A one-eyed seated male figure with exaggeratedly elongated and enlarged limbs, hands and feet. The quality of the conception and of the carving is typical of the best early pieces of Makonde sculpture.
