Description:
Leyden: Joannem Maire, 1619. Half-vellum over marbled boards; interior lightly browned with minor stains and a few tears. An unknown annotator (T8v) refers to Claudius Salmasius's Plinanae exercitationes of 1629 or 1689. From the library of the noted and distinguished French classicist and Greek scholar Jean François Boissande de Fontarabie (1774-1857). His image is pictured in Sandys' A History of Classical Scholarship, Cambridge, 1908, III, p. 248. He is best known for his work as an editor of Greek texts, including the editiones principes of Babrius and Maximus Planudes's Greek translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses (Sandys, pp. 249-50). Another signature of Schwin[...]', front paste-down, plus other assorted marks. Scriverius (1576-1660), an independent scholar, remains best known for this, his edition with commentary of the Roman epigrammatist Marcus Valerius Martialis. His edition possesses additional interest to scholars because of quotations from Josephus Scaliger (1540-1609).

Description:
Venice: Stephani Curti, 1689. Engraved title by Portio F., second letterpress title with woodcut engraving of a lion, decorated initials. Seventeenth century vellum over pasteboards, spine hand-lettered, front cover lacking, spine torn and detached from inner hinge; small stain at upper fore-edges, text not affected. An edition of Lucan's ten books on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey as well as an excerpt from Petronius's Satyricon consisting of the writer's "poem" on the civil war. The annotator, Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), a major figure in the history of law, first published his notes on Lucan in 1614. Housman remarked that, despite criticisms, "[Grotius'] exercise of choice and judgment was serious and steady; he is the greatest critic, excepting Bentley, who ever edited Lucan; and even now it is often necessary to a bandon Cortius and Oudendorp and the rest of his successors and return to the text of Grotius.

Description:
8vo. With 1 full-page plate. Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards; an excellent copy from the library of the Mount Wilson Observatory with the presentation bookplate to the Library from Adriaan van Maanen.
First edition, though a portion appeared in a journal a few years earlier. Ferrero (1839-1902) was director of the Italian Geographical Institute and a president of the Italian Geodetic Commission. His work here deals with the presentation of the method of least squares as it applies to geodesy. Least squares method is a form of mathematical regression analysis used to determine the line of best fit for a set of data, providing a visual demonstration of the relationship between the data points. Each point of data represents the relationship between a known independent variable and an unknown dependent variable.
Adriaan van Maanen (1884-1946) was a Dutch astronomer who spent time working with George Hale at the Mount Wilson Observatory, part of the… Read More

Description:
Two volumes. Folio. Titles in red and black. Contemporary catspaw calf over stiff boards; a fine copy of a monumental set.
First edition thus, third overall, of the Jesuit cardinal's most famous work. This economic treatise explores the moral responsibility of the Church and its people in proper distribution of funds and charity. It decries the sin of usury, calls for publicly funded social welfare programs, sets monetary compensation for civil and bodily harm, and establishes a template for courtroom procedures.
De Lugo (1583-1660) was a Spanish theologian and educator. He received early training in law that helped to inform his later writing, but after joining the Jesuit order he became a professor of theology. He dedicated this book to Pope Urban VIII and presented it to him in person, a move that led to his being appointed cardinal.
