Fitzgerald Georgia, 1971. Soft cover. Fine/None as Issued. F/Commemorative Edition (for Fitzgeralds "Diamond Jubilee") . This was an address made by Dr. Jay Shrader, who later published (through the Savannah Morning News) this short history and report of Fitzgerald and the Tribune Soldiers' Colony. This was a Rest Home for Union Soldiers from the Civil War, and I hope the irony is not lost to you. This small paperback appears brand new, no soiling, or foxing anywhere--must have been kept in someone's sock drawer over the years. No creasing to the binding, which is covered with black cloth(staples under the cloth). 57pp. Dr, Shrader praises the community and climate, which was beneficial to the "old soldiers". Rare in any edition. Comes to you in an acid free document bag--and I can have it in the mail tomorrow. BASA

New York, New York: The Century Company, 1900. Reprint. . Soft cover. Fine/None Issued. F/0/Reprint. " This account of a colonial Thanksgiving has been read aloud before each Thnksgiving dinner in the Stookey family since 1938 and with the Woodworth family since 1964. It is reprinted here on behalf of the children who have grown up in this tradition in hopes that they will preserve it for their families" --printed introduction inside front cover. This six page pamphlet is reprinted from Colonial Days and Ways as Gathered from Family Papers by Helen Evertson Smith, who in turn took it from the diary of Juliana Smith, written in 1779. I find no dates as to when this was printed, but I would guess between 1999 and 2013. It is in brand new shape, never read, and probably never opened until I started cataloging for sale. Firmly stapled with title on the cover, 6 pages long. No wear, clean, no markings. Just the thing to help the kids(and adults) these folks didn't have Stouffer's or… Read More

Description:
Knoxville Tennessee: University of Tennesee, 1994. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Fine/Very Fine. VF/VF/1st ed. stated. This first book length examination of cultural change in the Georgia Pine Belt challenges the conventional view of this area as an unchanging ecomonic backwater by examining its postbellum evolution from a self-sufficient economy to one largely dependent upon a single commerical crop--cotton. The demise of forest products industries during the 1870s and 1880s created new economic opportunities but left the area depentdent upon a single industry that brought deforestation and the decline of the open-range system with a generation. Book and Jacket Condition are Very Fine; as new. 392pp. First edition so stated. Notes, bibliography, index. Black and white photos. Jacket covered with a removable mylar sleeve.

Description:
Athens Georgia: University of Georgia Press, 1943. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. VG/VG/1st ed./signed. This is an unusual copy. This book originally belonged to Margaret Davis Cate, an important Coastal Georgia historian, and her name is boldly written, which was her habit, across the top of the front free endpaper. I bought this book at a sale of decommissioned Fort Frederica books, some of which came from her library. Under her sprawled name is Dr. Saye's inscription in the tiniest cursvise lettering: "to Mrs. Cate, whose work I admire" Albert B. Saye Jan. 12, 1952." The book is clean and tight, but has Presentation Label that has been marked out , a marked out line on the title page( which I'm sure said the Margaret Davis Cate Library, Fort Frederica National Monument). There are occassional notes made in pencil, a sentence underlined in pencil here and there, and there are a couple of Fort Frederica stamps in the pages(in the margins) and one on the back… Read More

Jacket is now covered with a mylar sleeve. 226pp. Great early photos section. We know very little about Sister Mary Bernard Deggs herself, but her history of the early years of the Sisters of the Holy Family, written more than a century ago and reproduced here in edited form, makes it clear that today's community of women --- teir dedication to the poor, to education, to the care of the elderly and orphaned--comes from a long and complex tradition that grew in response to the social needs of "their people".
