Carolina Beach, N.C.: The Blockade Runner Museum, 1967. Reprint. . Soft cover. Near Fine. NF/reprint Captain Roberts, or C. Augustus Hobart-Hampden, was quite a character. He was Post Captain in the British Navy and for a time was the Commander of Queen Victoria's yacht, Victoria and Albert. He made a fortune running the union blockade while on leave from the British Navy. Captain Robert slipped in and out of Wilmington (NC)harbor quite a few times during the Civil War. He had many more exploits, including becoming Admiral of the Turkish Navy. Booklet is clean and tightly stapled . No marking or wear to exterior or interior. This was an address made by Dr. Jay Shrader, who later published (through the Savannah Morning News) this short history and report of Fitzgerald and the Tribune Soldiers' Colony. This was a Rest Home for Union Soldiers from the Civil War, and I hope the irony is not lost to you. This small paperback appears brand new, no soiling, or foxing anywhere--must have been kept in someone's sock drawer over the years. No creasing to the binding, which is covered with black cloth(staples under the cloth). 57pp. Dr, Shrader praises the community and climate, which was beneficial to the "old soldiers". This book originally belonged to Margaret Davis Cate, an important Coastal Georgia historian, and her name is boldly written, which was her habit, across the top of the front free endpaper. I bought this book at a sale of decommissioned Fort Frederica books, some of which came from her library. Under her sprawled name is Dr. Saye's inscription in the tiniest cursvise lettering: "to Mrs. Cate, whose work I admire" Albert B. Saye Jan. 12, 1952." The book is clean and tight, but has Presentation Label that has been marked out , a marked out line on the title page( which I'm sure said the Margaret Davis Cate Library, Fort Frederica National Monument). There are occassional notes made in pencil, a sentence underlined in pencil here and there, and there are a couple of Fort Frederica stamps in the pages(in the margins) and one on the back… Read More
