Description:
London: R. Ackermann, 1815. First Edition. Three Quarters Leather. Fine. Rowlandson, Thomas. 8vo. 18 color plates, including two maps, one of which is folding. 14 of other plates are aquatints, one a colored etching. 400 pp. + 11 pages of index and list of plates/maps. Fine. Interior text and plates generally clean. (Folding map has minor soilage.) Binding tight. A little shelf wear to leather at corners. Spine rebacked preserving original/contemporary morocco with raised bands and floral decoration in panels. The gilding is somewhat faded, and there is some roughness to the spine leather. Yet given near pristine quality of interior, I consider this overall fine. Photos available if serious interest.

Description:
Bergamo: Insituto Italiano D'Arti Grafiche. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Montedoro, Marco. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. N.d. Circa 1920s. 148, [1] pp. With 9 tipped-in color plates featuring Arlecchino, Brighella, etc. Interconnected tales inspired by and relating to the Commedia dell'Arte. The plates are of vivid color and full of panache. Nominally juvenalia, these illustrations and accompanying text are even more likely to ingratiate themselves to adults, especially those intrigued by masques and the Venetian Carnavale. Interspersed with the Italian is Venetian and Bergamasco dialect. Montedoro, the illustrator, is an unjustly forgotten or neglected artist (to our knowledge). Other than light soilage on the white cloth, this is a fine copy. Con 9 tavole in colore rappresentanti Arlecchino, Brighella, e altre caratteri della commedia dell'arte. Le tavole sono pieno di colore brilliante e lo stile. Benche ufficialemente per i bambini, queste illustrazioni e il testo… Read More

Description:
New York: National Aniline & Chemical Co. Incorporated. Cloth. Very Good. N.d., circa 1920.s. 4to. 23 by 14.5 cm. Six panels, which open up, leporello or concertina style, containing 76 color strips, each of which is pasted down onto the leaf below. Color samples are numbered 1 to 76, with 14 per page, the last page containing the final six. Tissue guard of glassine covers each leaf. Inside front cover with a woodcut illustration of the company's headquarters which were located at 40 Rector Street in downtown New York. As the building first opened in 1921, this serves as benchmark for the earliest possible date of the catalogue's issuance. Since the drawing also shows horse-drawn carts, something that would die out in the 1930s, we are fairly confident of our 1920s dating. The building is still standing and serving as an office building today. Scarce, with only one copy listed on OCLC First Search -- Nat. Agr. Lib., and Condition: glassine tissue guards are creased and wrinkled, as… Read More

Description:
Haymarket, London: Thomas McLean, 1825. First Edition thus. Full Contemporary Straight-Grained Morocco. Very Good. Large Paper copy of what might be regarded as a Second Edition but is arguably a First Edition in the sense that the plates are entirely new. Some of Alken's most impressive work, here not just depicting equestrian sports -- foxhunting, coursing, racing -- but also cock fighting, dog fighting, bull baiting, badger baiting, boxing, fly fishing, various forms of shooting, and a few plates focused on just the animals used in shooting, such as pointers and setters. Folio, 38 by 27 cm. Frontis plate, title page, blank, iii-vi, List of Plates, blank, 10-no number, with text description of Frontis plate, and so 10 probably intended to be a "1"), followed by 49 plates, each with a blank back, and each plate accompanied by a text leaf, unpaginated, with text running one to two pages of description. Description:
Colombo (Ceylon, now Sri Lanka), 1903. Half Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. 18.5 by 14.5 cm. iv, 44 pp., the leaves made of heavy card stock. The author, a colonial officer for the British army, would later publish "The Annals of the King's Royal Rifle Corps," which contained his color illustrations of uniforms, arms and equipment, and other works. From this work, it is clear he had artistic aptitude, and as an officer in Ceylon, undoubtedly a lot of free time to indulge in the creation of this work. It would seem that this work was written with an eye on possible publication, but that did not come to be. Few will not be charmed by the many vignettes of badges and coats-of-arms, mostly rendered in bright watercolors, with some done as ink drawings. Also illustrated are flags and banners. Some of the tissue guards are heavily foxed, while the cards proper sometimes have offsetting from this soiling. A large chipped loss to the leather spine, with a partial loss of one letter of title. Still a… Read More

Description:
Stockholm: P. A. Huldberg, 1853. First edition. Hardcover. Marbled paper on boards. . Very Good. Scarce juvenile natural history color plate book, with only copies known at National Library of Sweden and Princeton. Oblong, 22 by 35.5 cm. 34 hand-colored plates, followed by title page, 101 pages of text. The plates are loosely in the style of the Schreiber/Schubert "Naturgeschichte" published in Esslingen, but here they are hand-colored, as was done in earlier German juvenile zoological and botanical plate books, and some of the images have a more baroque sensibility to them, such as the plates depicting swans and storks or that depicting a peacock. We would also note that some of the animals shown are illustrated as they would have been in the eighteenth century, with details not necessarily fully true to life. Among the more exciting plates, in our view, are one showing ostriches as they are hunted down by native huntsmen on horseback, or a whale blowing out a jet of water as… Read More

Description:
London: Day and Son, Limited. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. 1866 and 1867, 2 volume publication bound in one. These were the only two issues of the publication. iv, 252, iv, 196 pp. Over 50 color chromolithographs, missing frontis chromo to 1866 volume. The main point of this publication was to demonstrate the potential for the new form of color printing, chromolithography. The diverse range of articles thus facilitated the rendering of a similarly broad range of illustration: botanical, zoological, travel related, decorative arts, etc. Also, some of the illustrations are similar or the same of ones found in other publications, such as the plate of chickens for an article by W. B. Tegetmeier who also did a much sought after plate book on poultry. Other than the one missing plate, this copy is in near fine condition. It is tight and clean, with quarter buckram over marbled boards for the binding and the wrap covers (title pages) bound in. Some minor wear to the binding.
