Howell was managing editor at the St. Paul Pioneer Press, when journalist John Camp (Sandford's real name) won his 1986 Pulitzer, and was offered encouragement and support during the time he was writing his first published novel, The Fools Run (1989). Laid in is a flyer from the signing, held at Olsson's in Bethesda (Washington DC) on May 14th, 2003.
