Nancy Lancaster (1897-1994) was an American socialite who settled in England in the 1920s after her marriage to the British politician Ronald Tree. Credited with having "the best taste of almost anyone in the world" she commissioned the redevelopment of several large properties in the Home Counties, bringing her into collaboration with the interior designers Colefax and Fowler. First work with a photogravure frontispiece and 48 plates, two with two illustrations; second work with 2 colour frontispieces, 98 black and white plates and 7 maps and plans. Spines slightly faded and a little rubbed to the extremities, two neat tissue repairs to verso of folding map in volume I of the second work.

(ii), 104 pp. Publisher's pebbled purple cloth, rebacked preserving much of the original and its gilt lettering, early bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown. Frontispiece and 11 plates, one with an onlay. Occasional foxing, a little discolouration to the boards, a decent copy overall.

First edition, folio, (xiv), 198 pp. Engraving to the title page and 23 plates at the end, including 3 maps and 2 plans, some light foxing, contemporary manuscript shelfmarks to the paste down, 19th century engraved portrait of Smeaton loosely inserted. Contemporary speckled calf with the gilt arms of the Signet Library to both covers, neat restoration to corners, new red morocco label to spine, some mild rubbing to extremities, a very good copy. A beautifully produced account of the building of the third Eddystone lighthouse, one which established "...the prototype of all subsequent masonry lighthouses built in the open sea" (ODNB). It lasted for more than a century and is now situated on Plymouth hoe.

Second edition, two volumes bound in one, 4to, xviii, 423, (5), iv, 419, (5) pp. Engraved title pages and 81 plates, including 3 folding maps and a folding view, the latter and one of the maps with a closed tear to a fold crease, frontispiece and volume I title with contemporary signatures and light damp stains to the top and bottom edges, some foxing throughout, volume I title cut close to the lower edge with partial loss of the imprint. Contemporary diced calf, corners worn, neatly rebacked. "...one of the most detailed descriptions ever written of an eighteenth-century slave plantation society... The heavily edited first edition distorted Stedman's views on race, slavery, and social justice, and turned them more towards a pro-slavery position. A folding plate and 3 folding charts. One of the latter shaved to the neatline along the lower edge, all the plates with a little foxing and minor creasing, a very good copy overall. Bligh's account of the infamous mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty and his subsequent escape. An accomplished seaman, in 1776 Bligh had been appointed by James Cook as master of the Resolution as part of his third and final voyage. He gained promotion to the rank of lieutenant and several important commissions thereafter, and was given command of the Bounty in 1787 and set sail for the East Indies, tasked with bringing back breadfruits and other botanical samples to British colonies in the West Indies. Old closed tear to one plate (p. 63), some mostly mild foxing to the plates, one of the maps a little creased. Handsomely bound in modern green half morocco, an attractive copy. A career Naval officer, Gardiner decided to become a missionary and spent four years in South Africa, establishing a missionary station in Port Natal and presiding over the meeting that led to the founding of Durban.
