First edition, folio, (xiv), 198 pp. Engraving to the title page and 23 plates at the end, including 3 maps and 2 plans, some light foxing, contemporary manuscript shelfmarks to the paste down, 19th century engraved portrait of Smeaton loosely inserted. Contemporary speckled calf with the gilt arms of the Signet Library to both covers, neat restoration to corners, new red morocco label to spine, some mild rubbing to extremities, a very good copy. A beautifully produced account of the building of the third Eddystone lighthouse, one which established "...the prototype of all subsequent masonry lighthouses built in the open sea" (ODNB). It lasted for more than a century and is now situated on Plymouth hoe.

Bligh's account of the infamous mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty and his subsequent escape.
