He served only one year as Prime Minister, and his political career faded. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1850. William Francis Lynch commanded this, the first expedition that determined the Dead Sea to actally be below sea level in elevation. In 1861 he resigned his US commission and joined the Confederate navy. First published in May 1849; this is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the "Seventh Edition, Revised" from a year later, reflecting changes and corrected errors made in November of 1849. Brown pubblisher's cloth binding, decoratively stamped on both covers, with the front filled with gilt.Clean text; xx, 509 pages, with a 42-page (!) catalog in the rear; illustrated with engravings. London: A. Donaldson, 1832. White's great natural history is still in print. Here is an early 19th-century edition in a full-leather binding. Smooth calf with gilt ruling on the front and rear covers; five raised bands on the spine, highlighted in gilt and with a red and gilt label. Clean text; 562 pages, with Index and Index to the Antiquities; marbled endpapers, all page edges also marbled. There is no publication date; however, the Preface, by "J.R.," is dated 1832. Interestingly, there are thirteen different publishers listed on the Title Page.The textblock is close to Fine, very bright and supple. However, this is a Good only copy: both gutters have cracked and are very tender; and the spine leather has separated and is barely holding on; about 1/3 (lower) is demolished and is not present. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Trade Edition [stated "First Edition after the printing of 750 de luxe copies"], containing three plays: "Laughing Anne," "One Day More" and most interestingly, "The Secret Agent." Conrad's novel first appeared as a 3-act play in a 1923 English printing; but this American version is a four-act play.
