London: Printed for J Jenkins by L Harrison n.d. [1828]. First edition. 387x290mm. viii, [2bl]. Unpaginated, signatures erratic as usual. Dedication to the Earl of St Vincent. Fifty-five hand coloured aquatint plates and one uncoloured plate containing two etchings showing battle plans for the Bombardment of Algiers an the Battle of Trafalgar. The original paintings were done by Thomas Whitcombe (c1760-1824) who was one of the finest marine painters of the time. The hand-coloured plates were done by Sutherland, Bailey and Jeakes and are of the highest quality and are in superb condition in this copy. The paper is watermarked 1827 which provides a clue as to the date of this copy. All the tissue guards are present. The title page vignette of Britannia standing on the English shore while Neptune, kneeling before her, invites her to conquer the broad oceans has been hand coloured. The text describes the battles or other scenes (mainly the capture of French or Spanish ships) in the prints and, in some… Read More

Berlin: Verlag von August Hirschwald 1865, 1865. First edition. 8vo (212x133mm). pp. [iv], 96. Marbled paper over boards, backed with brown cloth. Remains of handwritten title label to head of the spine. Some wear to outer edges and corners but otherwise very good. Contents are very good but with light damp-staining to the lower third of the first thirty two pages. Browning to the title page and the last leaf but otherwise this is a clean tight copy. Ownership stamp on the title page of Dr med. R. Kobert, pract. Arzt. This is quite probably Rudolf Kobert (1854-1918), a pharmacologist and toxicologist who began his career working as an assistant to the physiologist Friedrich Goltz who, like Setschenow and Paschutin carried out experiments on the brains of animals. A nice copy of this important text with an interesting association. The title translates as "New experiments on the brain and spinal cord of the frog" and follows the publication in 1863 of "Physiological studies on the inhibition… Read More

Description:
New York Undated (c. late 1990s, early 2000s), 2000. Spraypaint, acrylic and marker pen and stencil on an original New York subway map. Signed by Seen in black felt pen and numbered 142/500. Although numbered as a print, these NYC Subway Maps with added graffiti are original works as each has a different graffiti style. Image measures 810x570mm and the frame is 890x640mm. The map is a folding plan showing all the subways, buses, railroad and ferry links in NYC. It has been unfolded and is laid flat on a white card and framed. In excellent condition. In the 1970s, SEEN organised a crew for the sole purpose of getting his name in the New York subway system. The crew was titled U.A. (UNITED ARTISTS) also known as the UA boys. While other crews recruited as many as possible, the UNITED ARTISTS intentionally kept their number low. There were a total of 5 members SEEN, MAD, PJAY, DUSTER and SIN. Seen is frequently referred to as the Godfather of Graffiti and although he did not invent graffiti art, he… Read More

Description:
n.p. n.d. [c1780], 1780. A manuscript poem on one side of a single leaf. Five verses of four lines each written in a neat italic hand. It has been folded in three for posting (there is the mark of a seal and, on the verso, the name of the addressee, Chas Blatchley Esq, Bury. A strip has been torn on the left edge no doubt when the letter was opened but there is no loss of text. Otherwise it is in very good condition with nice clear text. This poem by Sir Wilful Wiseacre is in praise of the recently invented Water Closet. The first patent for a flushing lavatory was given in 1775 to the Scottish watchmaker Alexander Cummings. In jaunty, amusing, mildly risqué verse, Wiseacre makes plain the advantages of this important invention: "No more her L[ad]y[shi]p shall go Trembling her Secrets to deposite Through Heat or Cold through Frost or Snow When shelter'd by our Water Closet".

London: Country Life. Arts et Metiers, Paris; Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1938, 1938. First edition. 250 by 190mm. [iv], 64pp black and white photographs. Illustrated card cover. Small crease to bottom right corner, small split to joint at foot of spine and front cover, bumping to head of spine and corners, some marking to white lower cover but overall the condition is very good considering its age and fragility. Internally very good. The introduction by James Bone is in English and the captions are in English and French. This English edition is scarce. Brandt's second book, A Night in London, was published in London and Paris in 1938. It was based on Paris de Nuit (1936) by Brassaï, whom Brandt greatly admired. The book tells the story of a London night, moving between different social classes and making use as with The English at Home of Brandt's family and friends. This is a very good copy of a ground-breaking collection of superb photographs. 'I photographed pubs, common lodging… Read More

London: Archibald Constable and Co 1819, 1819. First edition. 12mo. 190x110mm. pp. viii, 170. Uncut in the original boards. Rubbing and some wear to extremities and boards are loose (but holding). Some foxing but otherwise in very good condition. Joseph John Gurney and Elizabeth Fry were brother and sister, scions of the great Gurney banking family. Elizabeth was already a noted campaigner for prison reform when she joined Joseph on a tour of prisons in Scotland and the North of England. This book is their report. It was presented to Parliament where it made an impact on Robert Peel who, as Home Secretary between 1822 and 1827, introduced the Gaols Act which led to payment for prison officers, education for prisoners, putting female warders in charge of female prisoners and the prohibition of the use of irons and manacles.

Tokyo: Chikuma Shobo 1971, 1971. First edition. Portfolio of ten gravure prints, eight in black and white and two in colour. 592x420mm. The prints are in a large white envelope together with a separate title page on the verso of which are notes and details about the photographs (text in Japanese). They are protected inside the envelope by a heavy sheet of cardboard. This is all placed in a black card folder with an illustrated label covering part of the upper cover, spine and lower cover. The photographs are in excellent condition although there are some marks on the rear of the prints but these do not affect the images in any way. The white envelope has some fading and sunning and there is a little marking and spotting to the black portfolio case. Overall this is in very good condition - an excellent example of the complete set of these striking images many of which are from Shinoyama's 1970 book "Nudes".
