Condition faults: a small puncture on the spine; very light wear on the spine edges and cover corners; and two miniscule smudges on the verso of the first tiitle page. Like new binding; text pages without marks, folds, tears, foxing or toning.

He sailed to the Mediterranean, and was among the first citizens of the United States known to have visited Egypt. Shortly after arriving in Egypt he resigned his commission, converted to Islam and joined Muhammad Ali Pasha as the Topgi Bashi (chief of artillery) in an expedition up the Nile River against Sennar 1820, winning distinction as an officer of artillery. Some historians have noted that "there is a high probability that he became a secret agent" and that his service in Egypt was a part of that intelligence service. This beautiful book, with over 4,000 bird images, many by well known wildlife artists, is in virtually new condition. Other than a slight bump at the top front edge of the dj, we found no faults in the dj or the book.

Stated first edition. Author's signature on first title page by magic marker with the inscription "Merry Christmas". (Note: while the signature seems legitimate, we are unable to authenticate it). Clipped dj has a small tear at top near spine and at top front edge. Book is in new condition except for some small bumping at top of spine and top front cover edge.This is fascinating, very readable book by a highly respected sports writer.

Appears to be a later printing of the first edition. Both the ex-library book and the unclipped dj would be in 'like new' condition except for the following: There is a stamped library name and address near the bottom of the first title page, "discarded item" stamped near the bottom of the last endpaper, what appears to be a catalogue number sticker attached to the bottom of the dj spine and an inventory sticker or publishers sticker attached near the top of the back cover dj. The dj is encased in a transparent a plasti-kleer cover that shows some scruffing on the back (on the plasti-kleer cover not the dj). Unfortunately the mylar jacket has been taped on the book at four points: at the top and bottom of the front and back dj flaps. There are no other indications of it's library affiliations. Otherwise, the book and dj are like new. at its time of publication this book was one of the largest surveys available of contemporary African art.
