Description:
Waterford, [Ireland]: Printed by John Bull, Bookseller, Quay, 1816. 8vo, renewed spine with original red lettering-piece applied, gilt rules, original calf covers. 32 pp. First and only edition of this scarce account of a shipwreck in the treacherous waters of the Bay of Tramore, notable for the loss of 264 soldiers of the 59th Regiment, which was much distinguished in the Napoleonic Wars. Following the signing of the peace treaty with France on 6 December 1815, the 59th returned first to England, then on 25 January sailed from Ramsgate for Cork on board the Sea-Horse and Lord Melville transports. On the 29th, John Sullivan, the mate on the Sea-Horse and "the only person on board acquainted with the coast," fell from the fore-rigging and died a few hours later. The vessel was soon caught in a tremendous gale. On the 30th, she lost her fore-topmast, the mainsail was shredded, and shortly thereafter she struck in Tramore Bay. All but a few perished in heavy seas, a mere mile from shore. Also… Read more

Description:
London: Printed for Sir Richard Phillips and Co. Bride-Court, Bridge-Street, 1819. 8vo, later marbled paper over boards with red morocco lettering-piece at spine. A pair of African shipwreck/captivity narratives, both published as part of no. 3, vol. II of the publisher's [New] Voyages and Travels (1819-1823), but also sometimes found as separate pamphlets or bound together, as here. "Dumont was wrecked in Oct. 1782, on the coast between Oran and Algiers. He was captured by the Berbers ("Koubal"=Kabail), and passed much of his time in Tlemçen and the neighboring country, then to some extent under the control of the Sultan of Morocco, of whom, of the various renegades in that region and of the native customs, he supplies curious if doubtfully authentic particulars."-Playfair. Portenger and his shipmates were wrecked on the Ethiopian coast en route to Egypt from India on the 7th of June, 1801. Most made it to shore, but the party was soon attacked by native people and many were killed, while others… Read more

Various locales, including New York, Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, and California, ca. 1858. Narrow 4to (302 x 152 mm), one cover only, marbled paper over board, leaves loose. 26 pp. of manuscript. An engaging manuscript narrative of a California gold rush voyage, including a harrowing account of passage through the Straits of Magellan and lively descriptions of places visited along the way.Theodore H. Klages left Hamilton, Ontario for California on 17 August 1858. The narrative offered here appears to be a polished version of his journal, and was likely written within a year or two of his voyage. Klages departs by train for New York City, passing through Niagara Falls and stopping in Albany. He remarks early on that he is about to traverse some 15,000 miles of water and conveys the danger of his coming voyage. Klages leaves New York on August 22 aboard the steamer Hermann with some 600 passengers. On Aug. 30, they cross the Tropic of Cancer, and the Captain celebrates with a small display of… Read more

First edition. #553 of 1050 copies, signed by both Laughlin and Cohn.Born in Louisiana, photographer Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) is best known for his photographs of the American South and his beloved New Orleans French Quarter. After working as a photographer for Vogue (with then-editor Edward Steichen) and for the National Archives in Washington, D.C., Laughlin returned to New Orleans in 1946, where he worked extensively and "developed what he termed as his own 'visual poetry' by borrowing elements from modern photography-such as strong compositions and highly glossy printing techniques-and imbuing his images with mysterious symbolism" (metmuseum.org). Mississippi native David L. Cohn (1894-1960) was a prolific nonfiction writer with intimate knowledge of the Mississippi Delta. Much of… Read more

New York; Press of John Polhemus, 102 Nassau Street. Cor. Ann., 1873. 8vo (23 cm), printed wrappers. [3], 31 pp. Ownership inscription reading "A. H. Hoyt, 7 March 1873" on front wrapper. An extraordinary rebuttal by Democrat S. J. Tilden to a series of New York Times articles during the corrupt Tammany Hall, or N. Y. C. "Ring", period of New York politics. Tilden and others were accused by the Times and Republicans of doing nothing to prevent fellow democrats Boss Tweed, Sweeney etc from consolidating their power, and speaking up only when the tide was shifting. Tilden responds with a summary of this period, and lists numerous N. Y. Times comments and articles with his corrections and explanations, often using editorial quotes that undermine the reporters' accusations. An example follows from an Oct. 26, 1871 editorial: "Here we have [Broadway Bank Investigations] thanks to the labors of Mr. Samuel J. Tilden, full and complete evidence that Wm. M. Tweed differs only from a common thief in having… Read more

Minneapolis, 1945. 8vo, printed brown wrappers. 31 pp., including 4 pp. ads, text on inside of wrappers, numerous b&w illus. A scarce compendium of articles, reviews and images describing the fifty year career and Magical Library of highly-regarded mentalist C. A. George Newmann, inscribed by Newmann to friend and fellow stage performer, Lester Klock. Includes an account of Newmann's 7,000 volume collection, which embraced technical, historical, rare, and curious items, as well as periodicals and memorabilia. According to contributor Leif Gilstad, as a child Newmann could always find the hidden objects in games, and predict teachers' questions. As an adult, he became a scholar and was known for his "Gay Nineties" blind-folded drives through town to announce his shows. Newmann's inscription reads "To my old friend LESTER KLOCK with sincere, good wishes. C. A. George Newmann. March 6 - 1946." Klock was a versatile midwestern Vaudevillian, whose various acts are documented in a scrapbook he assembled,… Read more
