Sanger, a Viennese rocket engineer, made the greatest early theoretical and experimental contributions to the development of the reusable space vehicle. His "Silverbird" concept, which he and his wife (the mathematician Irene Bredt) worked on during the 1930s, is a direct ancestor of today's space shuttle; it was conceived of as "a winged vehicle propelled by a rocket engine burning liquid oxygen and kerosene, capable of reaching Mach 10.0 at altitudes in excess of 100 miles" (Jenkins, Space Shuttle, p. 1). In the early 1970s, Ruffini was instrumental in showing that "black holes are not just energy sinks, but can also represent the largest energy sources in the universe, each one totaling up to 50% of the mass energy of an electromagnetic black hole." Ruffini concludes the present paper with the statement that "the moment of gravitational collapse appears since now to be the most energetic process occurring inside a galaxy second in the entire universe to the formation of the Universe itself" (p. 418). Ruffini is now chair of theoretical physics at the University of Rome.
