(iv), 47 pages, 10 plates (4 in full color), and a lea containing two paper samples. First edition. This is the first English translation of Shimizu's study, first published in 1953. It is the only book in English devoted to the subject of Nara Picture Books, which are manuscripts from the Edo period (1603-1867). The book conta a checklist of all known books in this genre, an exhaustive history of the traditions associated with their production, plates illustrating the techniqu used, and two samples of the papers used in their making. It is an important book on a little known subject.

Thi copy contains the paste-down to front blank leaf of the Queen's Prize for bot awarded by the Department of Science and Art of the Council on Education in London to Ernest H. Wilson in 1896. Along with this is another paste-down no awarded from the City of Birmingham. Hinge wear to Volume I.
