A wonderful, large opaque watercolor by Louis Rhead depicting a woman carrying laundry in, with another woman putting laundry on a line, brick wall and trees in background in distinctively poster-like style, reminiscent of Edward Penfield, in bright colors. Matted and framed in simple wood frame (image size is: 7 1/4" wide by 11 1/4" tall; frame size is: 17" wide and 21 1/2" tall). Slight wear to signature, else fine. This may have been a study, or finished design for a book cover or poster concept, as the hanging sheet taking up a good area middle left, would be a perfect area for lettering/titling. These kind of graphic quality Rhead paintings are quite scarce.

Offered here is a wonderful pen and ink drawing and paste-up for the title-page of an 1899 pamphlet (or booklet) for the Twentieth Century Club, in Chicago. Matted and framed under glass, image size: 7 x 4 3/4 inches. "The origins of Chicago's Twentieth Century Club lay in the belief that the creation of a cultural and literary club composed of members from the city's best families could help Chicago overcome its reputation for coarseness. Spearheaded by Mrs. George R. Genevieve Jones Grant of Prairie Avenue and several of her friends, the club was organized to replicate similar organizations in New York and elsewhere. Potential members were nominated and vetted before they were offered membership. The club suffered from open tensions over control the club and the nature of its cultural and social activities. ASSOCIATION COPY FROM O'SHAUGHNESSY TO PRE-RAPHAELITE ARTIST ALMA TADEMA: (written in purple ink on first blank before title page: "Monsier L. Ama Tadema, with the author's best regards, 16th January, 1871." Full-page illustrated title page (prior to lettered title page and five textual illustrations by J. T. Nettleship in an abstract almost Blakean style. O'Shaughnessy's first book, inscribed to Lawrence Alma-Tadema, classical Dutch painter who moved to London in 1870 to rapidly become one of the most famous and highly paid painters of his time, befriending and working with most of the Pre-Raphaelite artists. A wonderful and certainly important association, occurring at the brink of both poet's and artist's burgeoning careers. Near fine.

Color poster, image size: 11 x15" on cardboard, probably printed in early 1940's from the original painting. We have not found if the image was originally published. There is one small chip out of the top left corner (about 1" square) which comes right up to the corner border of the image, small tear on side which doesn't extend into image, else very good. Scarce.

Inside endsheets both brilliant gold shiny paper. Two large closing brackets on outward edges. In original faux-wood paper box. Limited to 500 Numbered and Signed Copies by Violet Oakley, of which this is No. 173. This monumental production was personally overseen and published by Oakley over more than a decade of preparation and production and comprises seven separate folders or fascicles, each of which printed on special Italian handmade paper and printed in red and blue and black from manuscript calligraphy by Oakley. An amazing and exceedingly rare association between two of the three principal female Brandywine artists, Violet Oakley and Elizabeth Shippen Green (the other was J.W. Smith). Signed in attractive cursive hand across the whole the front free endpaper: "Merrie Christmas Greetings/ to/ Elizabeth- the Queen/ and/ Huger- the King/ from Violet/ "Cogslea"/ December/ 1930." Huger, referring to Elizabeth Shippen Green's husband, Huger Elliot. A monumental and endearing inscription. Association copies of books between the Brandywine artists are quite scarce. Book is fine.

Peel, Sept, 1846." morocco label on spine. 100pp. Very scarce Tennyson title. . Boards somewhat worn, but a vert clean and tight copy internally. Scarce thus.

Superbly bound by The Knicekerbocker Press (with their gilt pallet rear dentelle) in full blue-green crushed morocco with delicate and widespread wavy leaf and vine pattern on both covers and spine, gilt dentelles, marbled endsheets. A very pleasing binding by a noted binder in New York in the early 1900's. Spine evenly sunned, though slightly, else near fine.

Offered here are 52 folio printed leaves from the original portfolio, loose as issued, of the eventual 150 plates in the series, consisting of architectural floor plans, sketches, some full page and in color, including the color study for a house in Darmstadt and the color study for Hans Christiansen's house also in Darmstadt, as well as tinted photogravures. Each page measures 19 x 12 3/4 inches, numbered in the type, and with the Waysmuth imprint. Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908) was a leading architect in Austrian Art Nouveau and one of the founders of the Viennese Secession, and he designed the Vienna Secession Building in 1897. Folio size, 15 x 11 1/2 inches on card paper. Original opaque watercolor mock-up cover (or poster) illustration for "The Children of the New Forest," though we cannot locate a book by A. C. Black that had this image for the cover, were able to locate a book illustrated by Walter Paget with this same name and publisher, issued in 1930. There are many printer instructions written in pencil directing color designations, reduction specs, etc. Very good.

Bound in nineteenth century red goatskin, gilt-tooled covers in with a double fillet border and ornate rectilinear motif, six panels with gilt compartments. An attractive binding on this second edition of a book that was widely acclaimed dealing with the nature of the soul.

Offered here are are nine original pen and ink drawings, by Charles L. Pott (1865-1910), British 19th Century who appeared in Punch Magazine, including the title page with red watercolor thick circle and emanating rays surrounding the hot air ballon, and red lettering below. The drawings appear on large format artboard (about 15 x 10 inches for 8 out of 10, the other two 10 x 9 inches). Six out of ten with red/orange watercolor highlights and fill-ins. We were unable to determine if the book was ever published, but the drawings are certainly well-executed, and the fact that the publisher is given lends toward that conclusion; interestingly, the space where a title would be is blank, and instead, we find written in pencil: "SPACE for Title in Red." Each drawing has either full name signature, "Charles L. Pott," or monogram "CLP." Very good condition with occasional very light marking.

Large folio, with the original publisher's (16 x 12 inches) green cloth folders with cover stamped in white, and top sections of each the four flaps with attractive ornamental printed design. Title page in red and black, and ONE HUNDRED exquisite plates in many colors including silver and gold, with superb 60-page prefatory section replete with fine wood engravings, and each plate with explanatory leaf preceding. Complete. Most scarce thus. There is occasional wear, slight foxing, but on the whole very well-preserved in its original state with publisher's folders, which are quite rare to find.
