Description:
New York: Tudor Publishing, 1937. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Large octavo. 411pp. Blue cloth with gilt design and titles to spine. Edge and corner wear to the otherwise beautiful dust jacket. A very good copy in like jacket. The Dabistan was written in the 17th century by Moshan Ali, a widely traveled Persian scholar. It presents an outline of all the religions, creeds and sects known to the Orient, including Judaism and Christianity. No other work gives a more complete pictire of the customs, beliefs and manners of the people of the East. The famous 18th century Orientalist, Sir William Jones, who first brought this work to the attention of the Western world says of it: "It contains more recondite learning, more entertaining history, more beautiful specimens of poetry, more ingenuity and wit, more indecency and blasphemy than I ever saw in a single volume".
