Praha [Prague]: Fr. Borovy-Aventinum, 1932. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, in a beautiful fine binding in decorative blue leather. The front cover features a sailboat and line of trees in red, tan, green and gilt. Titling in gilt on the spine; the waves on the front cover are also gilt. Clean text; 87 pages. New York: R.H. Russell, 1902. A collection of 37 columns of Finley Peter Dunne's Irish bartender. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition [stated "First Impression, October, 1902"]. Rose cloth binding with titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 279 pages. Spine is lightly faded (with gilt still bright); very lightly bumped. A solid copy.. First Edition. Dublin: S. Powell, 1742. Quintus Horatius Flaccus ("Horace"). 65-27 BCE. The leading lyric poet of the Augustan age, his works were almost lost during the Middle Ages. Although Dryden called him "a well-mannered court slave," his popularity was restored in the Age of Enlightenment. Reverend Phillip Francis (1708?-1773) was a noted educator, one of whose pupils was the classicist Edward Gibbon. This seems to have been a popular publication, with several hundred subscribers to the edition listed within. The Latin text is on the left, opposed by Mr. Francis's English translation, and with extensive notes throughout. W.B. Stanford, in "Ireland and the Classic Tradition " (1978) observes that "Out of the multitudinous translations the best, perhaps (was) Philip Francis' Horace." An uncommon title. Paris: A. And W. Galignani, 1829. A nice miscellany of the Irish poet/musician Moore's work that was frst published in London in 1828; this is a Very Good copy of an edition from a year later. A scarce edition. Marbled paper covers with smooth calf tips and spine. Five raised bands with gilt ruling and decorations on the spine; titling in gilt within a black compartment. Clean text; 277 pages; brown (?) topstain. Armorial bookplate on the front paste-down of Edward Cardwell (possibly the Viscount of that name; warranting further research). Cracked at the second endpaper but holding well. This volume has an extremely fresh and bright text; supple and unfoxed. Externally it is rubbed at the margins; nonetheless, it presents nicely.. Later Printing. Quarter-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Philadelphia: Hugh Maxwell, 1804. This is the first book published by Thomas Moore (1779-1852), his translation of the Greek lyric poet; four decades later Moore would be one of the most popular lyric poet of his time, with the publication of "Moore's Melodies." This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition (preceded by editions in London and Dublin). Rather scarce. Red leather binding with gilt stampings. Marbled endpapers. Clean text; 301 pages, with an "advertisement" by Moore on the manuscript he used. There is an index of first lines. Engraved portrait of Moore opposite Anacreon on the Title Page. Contemporary (1810) notations by a previous owner. Corners are bumped and there is mild rubbing at the edges of the spine, but the covers remain bright and impressive. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1870. English classical scholar Theodore Buckley (1825-1856) edited this edition of Alexander Pope's famous verse translation; later he would do his own translation in prose. There is no indication of either edition or publication date, but the book is consistent with first editions by Crowell and has the look of the last half of the Nineteenth Century; Quercus therefore arbitrarily assigns it to a "First Thus" category from 1870. An attractive volume: maroon cloth binding with gilt bands and lettering on the spine, where it is named a "Standard Library Edition." Clean text; 337 pages. Mildly bumped. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1873. Best known for his early poem "Thanatopsis, " Bryant (1794-1870) was a prominent "Public Intellectual" throughout his lifetime. Translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey occupied him in the last years of his life. Originally published in 1871. These are Very Good (Plus) copies of a Later Printing, from two years later. Maroon cloth bindings with gilt lettering on the spine and titled on the front covers. Chamfered edges and gilt on the top edges. Clean texts; 272 pages and 256 pages. Light wear and minor discolorations; there is a previous-owner signature inked on the second free endpapers. Quite nice little volumes, rather uncommon; and an interesting rendition as well. Boston & New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1900. G.H. Palmer (1842-1933) was Alford Professor of Philosophy at Harvard, and his Homeric translation was quite popular. It has been reprinted several times; the illustrated edition from 1929 featured illustrations by Wyeth. Now it is uncommon (LoC holds it electronically). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the twelfth impression of the First Edition. Maroon cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 387 pages, with a fold-out map. Unknown: Unknown, 1793. The most famous work by the French philosopher (1712-1778) who was a major figure of the Enlightenment. This is the first book of the "Confessions," volume Twenty-three only of a larger set. Full leather binding; Greek ruling in gilt; the black spine is ruled, titled, and decorated in gilt. Clean text; 472 pages. Text is extremely bright, clear, and supple; certainly readable today, with no foxing or spotting. Five engraved plates. There is no publisher or city of publication given, but dated 1793. Corners bumped; rubbed at the margins, heavily on the foot of the spine. Unknown, 1793. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of Rousseau's "Complete Works." Volume Vingt-sixieme (26), part of a larger set, with no publisher or place of publication given. Containing part of Rousseau's famous "Confessions." Full leather binding, decoratively ruled in gilt on front and back; gilt titling, rules, and decorations on the spine in black compartments: "Rousseau 26. Confessions." Clean text; 478 pages; five full-page engravings. The textblock is exceptional - bright, fresh, with no foxing or other defects. The covers are rubbed at the margins, with a chip on the front cover. Paris: L'Imprimerie De L.H. Herhan, 1801. This is Volume Five only of a five-volume set of Racine's "Works," noted as a "stereotype" edition. In French. Full leather binding with ruling and titling in gilt on the spine within a red label.=; number "5" within a black label. Clean text; 317 pages, followed by a table of contents and a list of the volumes in the set. The ribbon marker is present. Rubbed around the margins, small cracks to edges of the spine. This is a Very Good copy of a "Nouvelle Edition" that has been "Revue, corrigee, & augmentee par l'Auteur" [Revised, corrected, and enlarged by the Author]. Volume three, Part 2 only. First Edition Thus. Uncommon to scarce. Full leather binding of red Morocco, ruled in gilt on the covers. Five raised bands with titling and deorations in gilt on the spine. The book begins with page 323 and continues to page 654. This is followed by the Approval by the King and a five-page publisher's catalogue. Clean text, lightly toned; unfoxed; completely readable. Paris: Chez J-B-Christophe Ballard, 1709. The Roman lyric poet Horace (65-8 BCE) was extremely popular during the Enlightenment and an influence on Milton and Pope among others. Many editions of his works were published; here is an early printing of one of the most famous, by the editor/translator Andre Dacier (1651-1722),"Keeper of the Cabinet Books of the King. Third Edition, reviewed, critiqued and considerably augmented by the Author" [from the French]. A Very Good copy in full leather binding; five raised bands on the spine, with gilt decorations. Clean text; 564 pages; some browning to page-ends, mainly at the end-papers. Heavily rubbed at the margins, with bumped corners, but the book remains sound. The title and decorations on the spine have mostly disappeared, but the textblock is excellent. Asolid copy of an historically important book.. Third Edition. Full-Leather. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1888. Ingelow (1820-1897) was more known as an extremely popular poet than a novelist. "Skelligs" is set off the Irish Coast, and aAlthough it has good moments a 19th-Century reviewer admitted that "the story drags fearfully." This is a Very Good Plus copy of a later printing of the "Author's Edition." Tan decorative binding with bright gilt lettering. Clean text; 666 pages with a page of adverts by the publisher offering her other writings. Inked "compliments" and evidence of a label (or pocket) removal on the endpapers - no markings to indicate library usage, however. New York: The H.K. Fly Company Publishers, 1912. This early mystery was made into at least three films (1914, 1916, and 1920). Barton Currie (1878-1962) was a journalist/editor and a bibliophile who specialized in Joseph Conrad; his co-author Augustin McHugh (1877-1928) is credited with adapting the book into a play than was produced by George M. Cohan in 1912. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Blue cloth binding, featuring an intimidating image of the officer , with billy, in lighter blue and tan; titling on spine and front cover in white. Clean text; 308 pages, with six pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. The artwork is spectacular. Fully illustrated endpapers (differing), a coloured frontispiece, with three others within. Light rub to the margins and the white lettering; very slight lean. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth.
