Description:
Parish of St. Suplice [Lower Canada],1 January 1798. 4 pp., about 12 x 8 inches, legible, folds, central scorch marks, otherwise good. See the Dictionary of Canadian Biography for the adventurous missionary career of Pierre Huet de La Valinière (1732-1806), Roman Catholic priest and Sulpician. In 1786 La Valinière published in New York a controversial catechism, Curious and interesting dialogue between Mr. Goodwish and Dr. Breviloq . . . , in both French and English. Two years later he brought out at Albany a 50-page fascicle entitled Vraie histoire, ou simple précis des infortunes, pour ne pas dire, des persécutions qu’a souffert & souffre encore le révérend Pierre Huet de La Valinière. . . . In this publication, as indeed in the first one, the author portrays himself as a martyr to the American cause at the time of the invasion of Canada in 1775–76. La Valinière’s rights as a British subject were finally restored in 1798.… Read More

Description:
1 January 1669. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, minor blemishes only, docketed on verso. Sir John Cox (d. 1672), naval officer and administrator. Sir John Cox commanded the Mary in 1665. In 1666, he commanded the Sovereign. At the time of the Four Days Battle, the Sovereign was laid up, needing more men for the crew. He fought in the St. James's Day Battle in the Sovereign (102 guns), where he was assigned to the Generals' division. In 1668, he commanded the Charles (96 guns). In 1669 he returned to Chatham as resident commissioner, replacing the discredited Peter Pett. Cox had already been at odds with this influential family, the Petts having a quasi-monopoly of dockyard offices at Deptford and Chatham. Due to the influence of the Petts, his efforts to end corruption at Chatham were a failure. Indeed Pepys had expressed concern at Cox's return to Chatham, suggesting that it would be better to appoint John Tippetts to Chatham and Cox to Portsmouth, allowing both the advantage of working where they… Read More

Description:
9 January 1794 for work done August to December 1793. 1 page 10 x 6 inches, some blemishes and light toning. In 1738 the 4th Duke of Bedford bought Houghton. His son, the Marquis of Tavistock, lived there from 1764 until he died in a hunting accident in 1767. The 5th Duke of Bedford rented the hunting park to a neighbour. Subsequently unable to let the house without the park, he ordered Houghton to be dismantled in 1794. The interior was completely gutted, leaving no hint of its former glory. In the early 1770s the Earl of Upper Ossory commissioned Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to landscape nearby Ampthill Park. He included Houghton House as a feature in the design though it lay outside the boundaries of his estate. Later, in 1804 the Earl acquired the park and the ruins of Houghton House. Today the house still dominates the landscape, providing wonderful views over its former hunting park. [English Heritage] John Carte’s account books (1793-1815) are held by the Senate House Library,… Read More
