Description:
[Moscow, Senate Press] 1785 [but c.1788]. Foolscap folio. Contemporary marbled wrappers (new backstrip); pp. [6], VIII, 24; dampstain to lower outer corners; otherwise very good; provenance: Van Brienen (signature, dated '93). A rare and notorious edict, outlining the duties of the nobility, broadened and tightened their hold over the population, and increased the burden of serfdom following the Pugachev rebellion. This copy may have belonged to an associate of the trading company R. Van Brienen, owner of the Russian ship 'Soleure', now remembered for its peripheral role in the assassination of the Prime Minister Spencer Perceval.

Description:
Warsaw, Galezowski, 1827. 8vo. Original [?] plain wrappers; pp. [4], iii, 150, [2, blank]; apart from light toning, and the final blank partly stuck to rear wrapper, a fine copy in its original state. Rare first edition of an early Skarbek title on political economy, based on the Polish experience, his On Misery and the Poor, dedicated to Zofia Zamoyska (1780-1837), member of the Polish high nobility, hailed at the Congress of Vienna as the most outstanding beauty. 'The conception of the moral unification and solidarity of all social states was ... developed and popularized on a European scale by Fryderyk Skarbek, writer, activist, and educator, who today is too little remembered. In his book On the Misery and the Poor (O ubóstwie i ubogich), edited in 1827, speaking about duties of the privileged he applied a theory of social models which he later developed in his essay in French entitled Essai de Morale Civique (1860), touching upon the so-called active people' (Zygmunt Komorowski, Universal… Read More

[Krakow], Nakladem administracyi "Naprzodu", [1905]. Small square 4to. Original lithographic wrappers in red and black; pp. 37, [3]; light traces of humidity to lower margin of front cover and small portion at rear; internally, apart from scattered very light spotting, a very good copy in the stunningly designed wrappers by Kazimierz Sichulski; small collector's inscription, dated 1905, in lilac ink to title-page. First Polish edition, published by the PPS organ Naprzod. Tolstoy's Bethink Yourselves, as it became known via Chertkov's immediate translation into English, had been triggered by the Russo-Japanese War and was translated into many languages. Here it appears as On War. It is a sincere cry against war and the calamities it brings upon humanity. 'Again war. Again sufferings, necessary to nobody, utterly uncalled for; again fraud; again the universal stupefaction and brutalization of men ... Something is taking place incomprehensible and impossible in its cruelty, falsehood, and… Read More

1935. Oxford University Press and Humphrey Milford in London, [1935]. 8vo. Original blue cloth, decorated and lettered in gilt; pp. [x], 327, circular vignette, printed in mustard yellow and black on title-page; toning to endpapers, final leaf carelessly opened, resulting in marginal flaw; a very good copy, ownership inscription to title. First UK trade edition. The publication of this prose translation is rather complex. A limited edition had been published in 1932, this was followed by a US trade edition in the same year. In 1935 OUP acquired the US sheets and issued the book. 'The many variant states of this 1935 English edition are difficult to unravel' (O'Brien). O'Brien A 144.

Description:
London, Printed for R.Dodsley, 1751. 8vo. Contemporary full calf, spine and boards decorated with gilt double-fillets; pp. xxiv, 96, engraved frontispiece; rebacked, retainig original spine, lower fly-leaf with tiny trace of worming in the margins, otherwise rather good. First published the previous year, this book presents itself as an English translation of an ancient Indian text found by a Chinese scholar in Lhasa, and is a collection of aphorisms on duties presented very much in the Enlightenment tradition of supposedly Oriental texts produced by European authors: Montesquieu's Lettres persanes (1721) and Oliver Goldsmith's Citizen of the World (1760-1761) being two notable examples. Almost certainly written by Robert Dodsley (1704-–1764), and published first in 1750, the book became an eighteenth-century bestseller, and by the end of the century some two hundred editions had been published in England, Ireland, and America, and it had been translated into many European languages ranging from… Read More

London, William Heinemann Ltd., 1924. 8vo. Original cloth, lettered in gilt, ornamented in blind; pp. xxi, [3, blank], 416, tipped in colour-lithographic plates after the author's watercolours; part of the original dust-jacket (inside front flap) pasted onto front fly-leaf, previous bookseller's pencil notes to endpapers, occasional light spotting or toning in places, a very good copy. First English edition of these delightfully illustrated war diaries. 'Schaumann was born in Hanover and at the age of 16 he was compelled to join the army against his will, but he eventually rose through the ranks to the rank of junior-subaltern, though he left the Hanoverian Army in 1799. When France invaded Hanover in 1803 Schaumann went to England where he was employed as a clerk at a Newcastle firm. In 1807 he decided to move to Russia. He never made it there because heavy storms forced him to take refuge in Goteborg, Sweden. Here too he found a brief employment as a clerk. When the English fleet sailed back to… Read More

His only complete work extant, Rerum rusticarum libri tres (Three Books on Agriculture), has been described by Harrison in his Note Upon the Roman Agronomists (1918) as 'the well digested system of an experienced and successful farmer who has seen and practised all that he records' (p. 10). Description:
Warsaw, Gebethner and Wolff, [1929]. 8vo. Later red cloth, front wrapper with mounted lithograph in two colours mounted on upper board; pp. [viii], 55, 7 lithographic plates in two colours by the author; edges of mounted front wrapper with a few chips, not affecting illustration, text evenly a little browned, due to paper stock; a very good copy. This is the first edition of an excessively rare Polish avantgarde book production, the first book pulication by Marjan Niżyński (1910-1943), a poet, playwright, painter and graphic artist, whose experimental theatre production Dalmino was closed down by the censors in 1930 in Cracow. In 1943 he was run over by a German car. The poems in The Story of the Hunchback of Jaffa Port by the teenager is considered a masterpiece of haunting scenes depicted in very expressive language. OCLC locates copies in Wayne State and Poland; not in COPAC.

Description:
Biographical Article Typescript on paper, c. 1960. Three leaves of yellow paper with three pages of text and several corrections and amendments in black and red ink, oxidation to upper margin due to paper clip; otherwise very clean. The apparently unpublished essay begins: 'On 25th July, 1943, Mr. Churchill wrote "I consider Wingate should command the army against Burma. [.]"'. According to Pitt, his investigation has revealed that 'while those who served under him profess a devotion amounting to idolatry, those who commanded him have combined with the Official Histories in almost unanimously denigrating his every action.' He concludes that 'Wingate was neither a charlatan nor a madman (and some of his critics have called him both) [.] but he was an imaginative soldier with immense powers of mental concentration and of will. The only essential for great generalship he seems to have lacked, was luck; and that lack was fatal.' Pitt analyzes the difficulties of the Bumese Campaign, especially… Read More
