Very rare first edition in bookform of the seminal On the Method of the Natural Sciences and the Role of these Sciences in general Education. 'It is generally believed that he [Strakhov] was the translator of Lyell’s report, published in the Journal of the Ministry of National Education, which introduced Darwin’s evolutionary theory to the Russian reading public. In an article in the journal Time in 1862, he surveyed Darwin’s ideas … Strakhov greeted Darwin’s theory as an addition to science and as a modern world view. Description:
Saint Petersburg, A. Morigerobskii, 1871. 8vo. Contemporary Russian half-morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered ingilt and with raised bands; pp. xix, 304; light wear to corners, brown-spotted in parts, a few underlinigns in crayon and pencil; contemporary Russian ownership inscription to front fly-leaf and title. Second edition in Russian, a new translation of Mill's seminal Subjection of Women, a text which gained added poignancy in the Russian autocracy with an established church. Mill's book had appeared first in Russian in 1869, a virtually unobtainable edition. Mill had a feminist contact in Russia, the leader of the women's liberation movement Mariia Vasilevna Trubnikova, who informed him that the progressive women pushed for an all-female university. He wrote to the group of women lead by Trubnikova that Russia would 'prove that a nation relatively recently civilized grasps the ideas of ameliorizatioj sooner than the older ones' (Stites, The Women's Liberation Movement in Russia, p. 73).

Warsaw, Galezowski, 1827. 8vo. Original [?] plain wrappers; pp. [4], iii, 150, [2, blank]; apart from light toning, and the final blank partly stuck to rear wrapper, a fine copy in its original state. Rare first edition of an early Skarbek title on political economy, based on the Polish experience, his On Misery and the Poor, dedicated to Zofia Zamoyska (1780-1837), member of the Polish high nobility, hailed at the Congress of Vienna as the most outstanding beauty. 'The conception of the moral unification and solidarity of all social states was ... developed and popularized on a European scale by Fryderyk Skarbek, writer, activist, and educator, who today is too little remembered. In his book On the Misery and the Poor (O ubóstwie i ubogich), edited in 1827, speaking about duties of the privileged he applied a theory of social models which he later developed in his essay in French entitled Essai de Morale Civique (1860), touching upon the so-called active people' (Zygmunt Komorowski, Universal… Read more

Original lithographic wrappers in red and black; pp. 37, [3]; light traces of humidity to lower margin of front cover and small portion at rear; internally, apart from scattered very light spotting, a very good copy in the stunningly designed wrappers by Kazimierz Sichulski. First Polish edition, published by the PPS organ Naprzod. At this time, his style of watercolours is sometimes resembling that of Egon Schiele. Kozlowski, illustration 211; not in COPAC.

1815. Edinburgh: Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1815. 4to. Recently bound in linen backed light blue paper-covered boards; pp. 139-211, 4 plates (one with handcolouring); fourth plate repaired to fore-edge, otherwise near fine. First edition, disbound from Volume VII of the Transactions. This is a highly important paper, delivered to the Society in 1812, by Sir James Hall (1761-1832). It "demonstrates his powers of observation in the field and records a further attempt to reproduce a geological process experimentally" (DSB). A friend of James Hutton at Edinburgh University, he was an early supporter of Hutton's then radical notion that crystalline rocks had cooled from hot liquids generated deep within the earth. By the time of this paper he was moving beyond Hutton: " he took up the ideas of De Saussure and Pallas, suggesting that the earth's surface is reshaped and recycled, not by the ordinary processes of erosion as Hutton believed, but by immense tidal waves.… Read more
