Some abrading to boards and spine, modest edge wear, one small chip to spine. Occasional minor foxing, hinges a bit tender, small chip to front pastedown. A Meiji-era writer travels across the United States and sails for Europe, then makes the same trip in reverse on a different route. Togawa reports on the state of the West in 1906. His "observations are clear and witty, and the reader is encouraged to seek out his work for its sheer entertainment value" - Susanna Fessler in Musashino in Tuscany: Japanese Overseas Travel Literature, 1860-1912, p.182. The work is illustrated throughout with reproductions of gorgeous illustrations by Japanese artists, including Okada Saburosuke, featuring American and European scenes. Some are tipped in; others are printed on inserted plates, including several color lithographs, and a…

Maquette is large folio, original pictorial printed boards. Photographs pasted in, some loose. Light chipping and wear. A large maquette with original typescript designed as a book proposal for Will Lane's work on the activities of the Seventh Air Force during World War II. The work sought "to narrate the complete circle of events that started with the Pearl Harbor attack...and ended only with the unconditional surrender of the Japanese." Formed in October 1940 as the Hawaiian Air Force, the Seventh was stationed at Fort Shafter and charged with protecting the Hawaiian Islands. On February 5, 1942, the Hawaiian Air Force was re-equipped and officially became the Seventh Air Force in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The unit was active for four years of operations across the Pacific, including the Battle of Midway and the…

[Mexico City]: Oficina de Dona Maria Fernandez de Jauregui, 1814. Still very good.. 39pp. Contemporary plain paper wrappers. Several wormholes neatly straight through text, some slight worming in margins. Minor wear and soiling. "A day by day case report of the lengthy but successful drainage of a hydrosarcocele [swollen testes]...it includes an account of the preliminary attempts at a medical cure, and the conferences of physicians headed by Rafael Sagaz. Verses by the grateful and rejuvenated patient, Jose Florencio de Mora Palacios, a householder merchant, close the account" -- Wellcome Catalogue. Medina calls for a portrait, but this is believed to be a ghost as it is not found in the copies at the Wellcome, Huntington, the Bancroft, or the National Library of Medicine. A scarce and rather grim Mexican medical work, with only a handful of copies in OCLC. Medina 10967. Wellcome Medical Americana 192.

Butte City, 1887. Very good.. [3]pp., on a bifolium. Signed in manuscript. Light tanning. Scare report of an 1887 meeting of shareholders in the Black Pine Mining Company, whose subject was the imminent failure of the Butte, Montana, mining venture. The root of the problem seem to have been a failed bond issue, which attracted only a minimal number of subscribers and raised just $21,000. The report proposes the sale of all company property and the formation of a new company in which current shareholders will be able to maintain their current level of ownership via additional investment amounting to a further twenty cents per share. We locate only one copy of this interesting announcement and resolution, at Yale.

Scarce broadside promotional for property in Presidio County, Texas, offered by land agent J.S. Daugherty in Dallas. Daugherty came to Texas from Kentucky in 1872 and opened his real estate office in 1873. He was also involved in several other ventures -- he laid out the town of Eastland, Texas; her supplied grain to Texas military posts; promoted the excavation of a deep water harbor in Galveston; and more. In addition to information on Daugherty's offices and services, the broadside prints a map showing several blocks and forty-one smaller sections of land available in the West Texas county organized in 1875, which at the time comprised nearly all of the Big Bend. The area in question actually now lies in Brewster County, which was separated from Presidio in 1887. Below the map, a lengthy typed text…

Omaha: Educational Publishing Company / Beacon Press, 1919. About very good.. [32]pp. Profusely illustrated with photographs. Original wrappers printed in blue, stapled. Some staining and soiling to wrappers, minor edge wear. Text tanned, occasional minor thumb-soiling. A rare and sympathetic account of one of the worst moments in Nebraska history - the 1919 lynching of an African-American man named Will Brown and the riot that broke out after his murder. The tragedy also took place during the "Red Summer" of 1919 when dozens of race riots broke out across the United States. As with the Tulsa Race Riots two years later, the incident in Omaha began when Brown was accused of improper relations with a white woman (an all-too-common lie which often resulted in race riots in the Jim Crow era). Brown was arrested and held at the Douglas County Courthouse. Soon enough, an angry mob of about 10,000 people gathered outside the building and demanded Brown be handed over to them. The city's newly-elected…

Philadelphia: Prichard & Hall, 1789. Good.. [1]p. in a slightly incomplete omnibus volume. Quarto. Contemporary sheep. Some chipping and wear to boards. Scattered foxing throughout. A notable American periodical appearance by the first African American poet, Phillis Wheatley, in an issue of the first sectarian magazine published in the United States. Page 403 of the present volume includes Wheatley's poem, "On the Death of a Child, Five Years of Age. (By Phillis Wheatly, a Negro)," first collected in 1773. Published five years after the poet's death and hinting at her literary connection to the Methodists, the poem here has a variant title (changed from the original "On the Death of a Young Lady of Five Years of Age," and inextricably cuts the final sixteen lines. Sadly, Wheatley's literary reputation cooled in America in the last decade of her life though the Methodists in America and England did much to keep her verses in front of the public in those later years. The Arminian Magazine was founded…

[Mexico]: En la Imprenta Imperial, 1821. Very good.. [4]pp., on a half-sheet bifolium. Removed from a sammelband. Minor wear at edges. Light dust soiling and faint foxing. Scarce printing of a speech by Manuel de la Barcena upon the arrival of news to Michoacan of the signing of the Treaty of Cordoba. Barcena opposed the early Insurgent movement in Mexico, but came to support the Plan of Iguala. He wrote several impassioned arguments for the liberty of Mexico, was a signer of the Mexican Declaration of Independence, and became a member of the interim government between independence and the First Empire. This short but emphatic speech, delivered in the cathedral in Michoacan where Barcena was a priest on September 6, 1821, celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Cordoba and the independence of Mexico granted by the agreement. Barcena tells his listeners that they have at last crossed the Red Sea and arrived in Israel, and invokes religion, unity, and independence as the "tres inmobles columnas, que…
