Early printing (possibly first?). An instructive, wordless book filled with pictures of every day objects for children to learn their correct names. With stunning full-color illustrations and a glossary of terms at the rear, this early example of a teaching picture book from one of the pioneering American publishing firms in the use of color printing for children's picture books.

London: The Medici Society, 1924. 4to, xxviii 319pp. White cloth with brown leather labels stamped in gilt affixed to spine. 20 hand-tipped color plates with captioned tissue guards. Corners and spine ends a tad rubbed, some wear to spine labels, free endpapers discolored, else an internally clean, tight copy with all color plates fine and bright.
First Flint-illustrated edition being a limited edition of 530 numbered copies. A wonderfully captured adaptation of Homer's epic translated by Andrew Lang and featuring W. Russell Flint's lavish illustrations. The illustrations for this book were first created in 1914, but due to the outbreak of WWI, the book's publication was delayed until 1924 when it was produced in this lavish, limited edition. Flint's gorgeous, classically inspired illustrations are a truly marvel.

First trade edition, US issue. Flint's gorgeous, classically inspired watercolors are a wonderful accompaniment to Homer's epic tale.

First edition. If you think the alphabet stops with Z, you are wrong. So wrong. Leave it to Conrad Cornelius o'Donald o'Dell (with a little help from Dr. Seuss) to create an entirely new alphabet continuing from Z! This rhyming picture book introduces twenty new letters and the creatures that one can spell with them. This book was recently withdrawn from publication by the steward of Geisel's literary legacy, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, due to certain stereotypes featured in one of the images in the book.

Stanley, a young man whose uncle is a trader on the Indian and Burmese rivers, sets out to join him just as war is declared by Burmah against England. He joins the military where his familiarity with Burmese customs and language make him of such use that he is added to Sir Archibald Campbell's staff. After several narrow escapes in battles and adventures while scouting, he and a half -dozen men set out to rescue his captured cousin on to be besieged in an old ruined temple.

A companion to Krauss & Sendak's first collaboration, A Hole is to Dig, this delightful book of wisdom and aphorisms includes such gems as "A screaming song is good to know in case you need to scream."

DILLON, Leo & Diane. Original Artwork for the covers of The Iliad and The Odyssey. 2 paintings, each being mixed media artwork on board created for the 1969 Washington Square Press paperback editions of Homer's epics The Iliad and The Odyssey. Each image measures 9.5" x 18" and was done on paper laid on 23½" x 15½" boards. Both pieces are signed in the lower left corner.
These two pieces are great representations of the fantastic cover style employed by the Dillons in the late 60s and early 70s, which resulted in their numerous commissions for science fiction and fantasy covers as well as their award winning work in children's books. Leo & Diane Dillon received the Hugo Award for Profession Artist in 1971, are the only artists to win the coveted Caldecott Medal two years in a row (1976 and 1977), and were runners up for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1978. We are selling these two paintings as a pair.
