Description:
[circa 1880's]. 4" x 6" albumen print photo, on 8.25" x 10" mount. Title in manuscript at bottom right corner of mount. An evocative photo of Boston's Old State House, somewhat dwarfed by three granite buildings, situated behind a cobbled square where a horse-drawn cab is parked with sign on carriage door reading "Public". A man can be seen standing by the carriage in a blurred section of the image [smoke, dust, fading, foxing?], another horse and buggy travel behind. Manuscript title reads "Old City Hall", indicating its function from 1830 to 1841. The building was built in 1713, for the Massachusetts Bay Colony Government, and used as the State House until 1798, became the first separate City Hall in 1830, and a museum operated by the Bostonian Society in 1881; in between, it served as a location for commercial enterprises. CONDITION: Good, some toning and a blurred section in bottom right corner; light foxing, soiling on mount.

Description:
[Oakland: Black Panther Party, 1970]. Bifolium on newsprint (44.5 x 29 cm). 4 pp. A scarce Panther item, published both separately and also as an insert to the June 1970 issue of The Black Panther newspaper.During the late 1960s and early '70s, the Black Panther Party attained the height of its influence and underwent a shift from exclusively black-oriented concerns to a more capacious and inclusive program, as demonstrated by this document. Composed by two of its most famous leaders, Eldridge Cleaver and Huey P. Newton, the present text was issued by the Panthers on the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and comprises three works: "On the Constitution," "Towards a New Constitution" and "Message to America." The latter calls for the adoption of a "Revolutionary People's Constitution" and threatens armed insurrection if their demands are not met. "We are 25 to 30 million strong, and we are armed." "On the Constitution" follows suit with the following declaration: What we need, at this time,…

Description:
East Haddam, CT: February 1, 1821. 18mo, recent half red morocco spine with marbled paper boards, gilt morocco title piece on upper cover. 19 pp. of manuscript. CONDITION: Very good. A short manuscript paper by an anonymous author on the question "Has temporal Death Promoted the Temporal happiness of mankind since the fall of Adam?" given before the Friendly Debating Society of East Haddam, CT. It seems that the affirmative was the only side to present, and the group voted "in the affirmative by 6 against 5." Addressing himself to the society's president, the speaker begins with a counter-argument citing the grief inspired by the death of loved ones but eagerly refutes that line of thinking with a series of escalating points. First citing God's will and the relief brought to society by the death of criminals, the bulk of his argument rests on practical-minded calculations about the Earth's size in relation to the population it would need to support if nobody ever died. If all those who had passed…

Description:
Dedham, [Mass.]: H. Mann, July 8, 1808. 8vo pamphlet, printed wrappers, bound with thread. 16 pp. A passionate oration on liberty and independence, and a call to defend American rights against corruption and avarice. Richardson states "In the catalogue of our rights, that of electing our rulers, though in itself a burden, takes a high rank. Responsibility is a barrier to oppression. When rulers are subject to the laws, and responsible for their conduct, and the people vigilant and discerning, the laws will equally protect the rights of all, and the government will be administered with an eye to the public good...But the abuse of this right is almost as dangerous to the public liberty as its loss. The wisdom that discerns, the patriotism that desired, and the spirit and energy that pursued the public good, are essential requisites in a public character. But when a people, poisoned by calumny, and deluded by falsehood, elect to office those who flatter their vanity, inflame their passions, and mislead…
