One of 750 copies privately printed by George Grady Press, New York for George Zabriskie as a Christmas greeting. Presented to Mr. & Mrs. (Walter) Klinefelter [the bibliographer and scholar from Red Lion, PA]. This story "was taken from Everybody's Magazine of August 1906 as republished without illustrations in Rolling Stones in 1912." George Albert Zabriskie (1860-1954) was President of the New York Historical Society from 1939-1947, and Honorary President from 1948 until his death in 1954. He was a great enthusiast of fine books and book binding, and an expert amateur hand-tooler and finisher of books. Though he lived in New York City, he "wintered" in Florida, and issued these charming Christmas keepsakes from his home: "The Doldrums" a Mission-Spanish Revival residence… Read More

Description:
Harper & Brothers, New York & London: 1906., 1906 pp. vi, 279. Decorated title page. Uncut and partially unopened. 8vo. Original full green cloth binding, gold stamped spine. Slight dust spotting. Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936) was an American humorist and writer from Chicago. His fictional 'Mr. Dooley' expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub and he spoke with the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant from County Roscommon. Dunne's sly humor and political acumen won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was a frequent target of Mr. Dooley's barbs. Indeed Dunne's sketches became so popular and such a litmus test of public opinion that they were read each week at cabinet meetings in Roosevelt's White House. HUMOR 3 Language: eng. Hardcover. Ph.-D. Pierres, Premier Imprimerie Ordinaire du Roi, &c., Paris: 1785., 1785 47 p. 4to. Unopened. Uncut. Old dampstain. Sewn in plain wraps. The eminent surgeon and anatomist Jacques Tenon is best remembered today by a major Paris hospital that bears his name, as well as by a capsule to which the muscles of the eye are attached. But his study of hospitals and medical education in France is his real monument. Tenon, member of the Royal Academies of Sciences, Surgery, and Agriculture, and well connected to the reforming ministers of pre-Revolutionary France, was a pivotal player in the work of a group of scientist celebrities from the Academy of Sciences, under Crown sponsorship, to rebuild the municipal hospital of Paris (1785-1789). The reports he produced and great his 'Memoires sur les Hospitaux de Paris' (1788) remain the most widely cited and influential Enlightenment treatises on the architecture, goals, and operation of what was to become the modern hospital. This is an extremely… Read More
