Volk for one chance for a marble bust of Clay. Memorial volume for the American statesman famous as "The Great Compromiser" for his role in defusing sectional crises. Leader of the Whig party and five times an unsuccessful presidential candidate, Henry Clay (1777-1852) played a central role on the stage of national politics for over forty years. Amsterdam: Menno Hertzberger & Co, 1967. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 218 p. First edition, limited to 100 copies printed for private distribution. This collection was described by Lawrence Clark Powell, who helped arrange for its publication, as containing "erudite discussions of Oriental and European philosophy, explicitly footnoted, and was apparently written years before when Brent was undertaking an unfinished Columbia University doctorate in philosophy. What was really unexpected is the inclusion of a short four-act play, a searching morality on adulterous love." Presentation copy, inscribed by Brent to esteemed Southern California historian Doyce B. Nunis, Jr. on the front flyleaf. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with gilt titles. The dust jacket is a trifle tanned along the spine and folds; else very good or better. Inscribed by Author.

Description:
New York: William Morrow, 1987. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 305 p. Carhart, a 1966 West Point graduate, was fighting in Vietnam the following year and like many of his fellow servicemen felt it was a patriotic duty to risk his life for his country. In combat he discovered not only the horrors of jungle warfare but also the dangers of being given orders by superiors unfamiliar with a situation on the battlefield (he was branded a coward for pointing out that a certain tactic would bring heavy casualties). He was briefly in Saigon, where he had a romance, then was an adviser in the Mekong Delta, where he went on what he terms "search-and-avoid" missions, allegedly to find Vietcong but actually designed not to encounter the enemy. Presentation copy, inscribed by Clark on the front flyleaf. Octavo. Minor edgewear to the dust jacket, with some prominent sun fading along the spine and the top of the front panel; else very good. Description:
A pair of albums filled with 106 photographs taken during World War II by the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army. Many of the images are marked "not for publication" with stamps or notes on the verso. The photographs are from the China Burma India Theater (CBI) and range from images of surgery on a soldier to extract a bullet to GI's interacting with the indigenous populations and the transport of supplies across the Burma Road. Congress established the U.S. Army Signal Corps on March 3, 1863, and today it is in charge of communications and information systems support for the armed forces. Signal Corps photo teams, carrying what was then state-of-the-art equipment, would go out into combat operations, often by themselves, and cover the events where civilian journalists either wouldn't go, or couldn't go. All of the photographs in these two unmarked albums are printed in black and white with the Signal Corps seal imprinted in the lower right-hand corner. They are all linen backed with identifying numbers…
