Description:
New York: Osprey Publishing, 2008. 1st Printing. Soft Cover. Very Good. 7x0x9. Laurier, Jim. First printing. Laminate starting, edge wear. 2008 Soft Cover. 80 pp. Known for the distinctive 'sharkmouth' decoration on their noses, P-40 fighters first saw combat in China during World War II. Their most common adversary was the Japanese Nakajima Ki-43, nicknamed 'Oscar.' Carl Molesworth describes and explains the design and development of these two foes, the products of two vastly different philosophies of fighter design. The P-40 was heavily armed and sturdy with armour protection and self-sealing fuel tanks, but paid for this with the loss of speed and a sluggish performance at altitude. The Ki-43 was a rapier to the battleaxe P-40 and the Ki-43 was immensely nimble, though with less firepower and durability. This book examines these two different fighters, and the pilots who flew them over China, with an action-packed text, rare photographs and digital artwork.

New York: NAL Caliber, 2010. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 6x1x9. First edition. An exceptional copy. 2010 Hard Cover. xviii, 489 pp. "Between America's retreat from China in late November 1941 and the moment General MacArthur's airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors enjoyed a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home. In The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life stories of the five men who put their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the story revealed in the miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a great ocean…

Hailey was embedded with the U.S. Navy from the Solomons to the Aleutians. Foster Hailey, New York Times war correspondent in the Pacific, here describes the first two hard years when our forces in that region were fighting odds every time they went to sea or joined the issue ashore or in the air. His account is the history of our whole Pacific naval campaign as it developed step by step. Mr. Hailey was in the front line from the Solomons to the Aleutians; yet he was not out to have adventures himself but to get the facts, and he gives a straightforward, eyewitness account of what other men did. Admirals Nimitz and Halsey, General MacArthur, John Smith and Joe Foss,…

UK: Basil Blackwell, Ltd, 1991. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 6x1x9. First edition. Ink name and date on front free endpaper. 1991 Hard Cover. xvii, 397 pp. Black-and-white illustrations throughout. This is the first survey of religious beliefs in the British Isles from the Old Stone Age to the coming of Christianity, one of the least familiar periods in Britain's history. Ronald Hutton draws upon a wealth of new data, much of it archaeological, that has transformed interpretation over the past decade. Giving more or less equal weight to all periods, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, he examines a fascinating range of evidence for Celtic and Romano-British paganism, from burial sites, cairns, megaliths and causeways, to carvings, figurines, jewellery, weapons, votive objects, literary texts and folklore.

London: The Royal Collection, 1999. Reprint. Large Softcover. Fine. 11x7x1. A fine copy. 1999 Large Softcover. 318 pp. "Gathered over the centuries by successive British monarchs, the Royal Collection is extensive and unique. The 7,000 paintings that hang in the royal palaces and residences constitute a visual record of the tastes of patrons from Henry VIII to Queen Victoria. Christopher Lloyd moves away from a traditional chronological account of the growth of the Collection and adopts a more wide-ranging, thematic approach to the pictures. After describing the part played in the Collection's formation by the three great connoisseur sovereigns Charles I, George IV, and Queen Victoria (under the guidance of Prince Albert), he looks at the art from widely different angles. Topics include the effect of the Reformation on painting in England and the importance of the Grand Tour; animal and landscape painting; international relations, diplomacy, and warfare; informal portraits of monarchs and…
