Description:
Detroit: Packard Motor Car Company, 1927. First Edition Presumed (Of this catalogue issue). Wraps. Two staples. . Very Good. Oblong, 13 by 28.5 cm. 16 pp. 12 of the pages are color plates, each featuring a model of one of the two lines. The difference between the 5-26 and the 5-33 line is merely size, the latter being slightly larger. Otherwise, the two lines appear to completely parallel one another in their styling. All the cars, to our eye, have an elegant presence, as they almost certainly had to our ancestors, since Packard was regarded as a luxury brand. The colors are varied and vibrant. The images are based on photos but processed to appear almost painted. The inside front cover has a mounted slip giving prices, which ranged from $2,275 to $2,785, which in today's dollars would easily be about 20 times more, or starting at $40,000 plus. Light wear. Slight browning of upper edge. A touch of light soiling, very inconspicuous, on the wraps.

Description:
Detroit, Michigan: The Packard Motor Car Company, 1936. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good . Oblong, 23 by 30.5 cm. Unpaginated, 32 pages. Color illustrations on virtually every page. Many are based on photos but with painterly enhancements, including a drawn background, colorizing, other touches to create some simulacrum of a painting. 14 pages are essentially full page plates depicting a single car model, this in full and bright color, with a green and white drawn idyllic background. Two pages are devoted to full page illustrations of car interiors, a single illustration in each instance. At the center are large photo illustrations, onone side of the company's sprawling plant, the other side, of its testing track. Four pages are given over to smaller detail illustrations of interior features. The final six pages show the mechanics of the car, the motor, the underbelly, etc. Two of these illustrations are larger format, and close to full page. Description:
1944. NA. Good. The pictorial side of the coupons shows a fighter holding two flags. While printed, one can easily perceive this image as having been painted directly onto the sheet, and this lends excitement to the image. Both sides of the sheet are stained, but not so much as to compromise the image, and we believe as an unused sheet this is a rare survivor.

Description:
London: Dean and Son. First edition presumed. Paper on boards. Fair. N.d., circa 1850s. Folio, 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated, 33 leaves, including title page, with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists, but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative, and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places, most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order, as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic, yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian, this is more than dominated by that which is humorous, unexpected, and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse, and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual… Read More

Description:
Chicago: Thompson & Thomas, 1903. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. Oblong 9.5 by 7.5 Inches. Unpaginated, between 200 and 300 pages, with about 20 published colored, with notion that the user of the book would emulate these pages. Only about three of the pages have been colored by a child, and they were done neatly, making for a remarkably clean copy of a children's coloring book of the early twentieth century. Many of the drawings have a Greenaway style. This is a very good copy. Cover has soilage and some wear by the spine tips, and one prelim page has starting separation, but otherwise tight, and interior clean.

Description:
NA. Very Good. Unusual medium of paint over photograph, depicting two major dramatic actresses of the period sitting at tea. What is shown might be from a stage performance, or it might simply be a picture of these two celebrities socializing as themselves. Both women were a part of the Augustine Daly company. Ada Rehan (1859-1916) was born in Ireland as Delia Crehan. She became one of the leading Shakepearian heroine of her day, and she had many successes in other roles, both classic and contemporary. Edith Kingdon (1864-1921) retired from acting when she married George Gould, the son of Robber Baron Jay Gould. Pictorial part of work measures 12 by 16.5 cm.

New York, 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. . Very Good. 4to. 28 by 21 cm. 48 pp. With many color illustrations of home exteriors and interiors. National Lead Co. produced Dutch Boy paint, still a popular brand. The book depicts a variety of home styles -- Colonial Revival, bungalow, Queen Anne, etc. -- then in favor, and for both then and now the renderings capture a suburban ideal. The advice extends well beyond the subject of paint colors to include such topics as exterior landscaping. Above all else, though, the booklet is a well-written "primer" on paint, its purposes, its make-up, its costs, etc. Small corner bump to front and back cover, with matching crease to corner of leaves within. Bright and clean pages.

London: Robert Triphook. Harding and Wright., 1813. Full Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. 34, xviii, 492, xv, 700 pp. Supposedly only 165 copies printed. An early anthology of synopses, adaptations and condensations including the stories of some of Shakespeare's best plays, legends, biographies, histories. This was a seminal source for readers of an earlier time. Attractive print. Mostly clean inside, with only occasional light soil marks and a few light stamps of a prior owner in the margins. The black morocco is scuffed and has rubbing along the edges and spine extremities. Still the contemporary binding remains handsome.

Description:
Paris: Devambrez, 1928. First Edition. Cloth. Fine. Folio, 32.5 by 27 cm. Unpaginated, title page on tissue, followed by 123 leaves of thin card, each, after the first four, with a full page advertisement for a particular high-end Parisian jeweler, couturier, boutique, cosmetics company, celebrated restaurants and other high end carriage trade businesses. 41 of these ads, by our count, have some degree of color, and we aren't counting a few for which the color is only red applied to letters or a geometric ornament. The ads are really more than that -- they are often stunning works of art, more often than not epitomizing the Art Deco style associated with the age. Human figures are highly stylized, often elongated as in vanity portraiture, facial features indistinct or omitted entirely, but the aura of elegance and attractiveness strongly suggested, attitudes of aloofness, confidence, or patronizing on display; the garments luxuriant and somehow vivid, even when rendered vaguely. The eminence… Read More

Description:
New York: Sam'l Gabriel Sons & Company. Leporello. Very Good. N.d., circa 1920s. Oblong leporello with six pop-up cages housing lions, tigers, camels, zebras, deer and bears. Behind the cage bars lie a more naturalistic setting, as opposed to the stone and brick of standard zoo architecture of the era. The front cover depicts a zoo elephant ride, with tots sitting aloft, and the rear board features buffalo. A most charming toy book, which stands easily upright, allowing for the cage pop-ups to be opened to a more three dimensional viewing. The panels are attached by strips of red cloth. On the opposite side from the cage pop-ups are descriptions of various animals and black and white illustrations, and these include other animals such as kangaroos, monkeys and ostriches. Given the construction of the accordian-like book, there is a suggestion of looseness to it, but the panels are firmly attached to one another and the pop-ups, which require a little manual assistance in pulling out,… Read More

Description:
Belfast: S. C. Allen & Company, Ltd., 1920. Wraps. Very Good. Poster catalogue for productions of children's theater. While title speaks of pantomime, the posters could work for non-pantomime puppet theater, or really any production based on the 22 popular tales served by the poster offerings. Tales include "Aladdin", "Babes in the Woods", "Beauty and the Beast", "Blue Beard", etc. etc. N.d., circa 1920s. Oblong, 18.5 by 25 cm. 93 pp. With tipped in slip before first page speaking of pricing. Each of the tales represented has its own title page, folllowed by 3 to 6 pages of poster images, one to three per page -- but mostly two on a page. Posters capture different aspects of the time-worn stories, and can be cartoonish, as one might expect, to being more provocative, showcasing comely cheesecake of the day. Almost all posters are drawn illustration, with a few featuring a photo or based on a photo which has then been transformed or enhanced. Scarce -- no copies found on OCLC First Search,… Read More

Description:
Fine. Lovely vignette of female equestrian on white horse. We don't know when this was made, but our best bet would be around 1920, and probably from England. 29 cm tall. The purpose of a paper cutting knife was to cut uncut leaves in a new book. By the 1930s most books were sold with the pages pre-cut. The early twentieth century was a transitional period, though, when it was still not unusual to encounter books with uncut pages. To cut the pages, a knife with somewhat smooth, rounded, dull edges were used, as anything else would have led to an inordinate amount of collateral damage.
