VG sturdy library edition, with orange boards.
The pages are full of Beautiful watercolor paintings by Taro himself.
Taro and his wife Mitsu, real names Jun Iwamatsu and Tomoe Sasako, were antifascist activists in addition to artists; they met in the Japanese Proletarian Artists' League. After being arrested and tortured by the Japanese government for their activism, they fled to America; they took on their pseudonyms when they were hired by the Office of War Information, and later the Office of Strategic Services, to protect their family still living in Japan. They produced anti-military propaganda for Japanese consumption in various forms throughout World War II, including illustrating handbills for dropping over battlefields. After the war, Taro and Mitsu wrote PLENTY TO WATCH and their other children's books to tell their American-born daughter Momo about life in Japan before the war. Description:
Simon & Schuster, 1955 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Fine ivory boards with gilt title and bright green spine also with gilt. No marks, tight clean edition with PO's book plate on the first page. Colorful, paper DJ with an elephant, title, author and embellished with green and red. "Pondoro" means "lion" in Chinyungwe. It was the natives' name for John Taylor when he first began to hunt in Africa, on the lower Zambesi. Actually it is a shortening of the more formal title Chimpondoro, meaning "the lion-like one" or "the roaring of the lion." For more than thirty years Taylor - Pondoro- has been a professional hunter, often out of touch with civilization for as long as three and four years at a time. " I did not learn of World War ll", he says, "till some of my men went in for provisions and brought back tea and salt wrapped in old newspapers. Where I am there is no radio and I never see another white man." Bookin' it does not endorse ivory hunting. Proceeds to support elephant rehab.
