Paris: publisher not stated , 1915 ca. Good. 275 x 190 mm oblong. [1] leaf and [54] photogravures printed on card stock showing views of Paris, St. Cloud, Versailles, and Trianons during the years of transition from horse-drawn to motorized vehicles. Upper covers a bit soiled and discolored, with some fraying along right edge. Owner's inscription in ink on front pastedown, "Paris France, January 31st 1919. U.S.S. New Mexico @ Brest." Sporadic notes in pencil on reverse of some images (e.g. "very fine paintings in long gallery" opposite a photo of the Louvre). 1913 was the last year of service for horse-drawn busses in Paris. Motorized busses are visible, along with a few motorcars, but the majority of cabs are horse-drawn or, indeed, pulled by men. All the city's great… Read More

Description:
[Vicenza?]: Il Comitato di Pubblica Istruzione, [1797]. Original edition. Very Good. Octavo (18 cm); 16 pages. In red and green lattice-patterned woodblock-printed paper wraps. In 1797, the Republic of Venice fell to the French. Beginning in April of that year, the city of Vicenza and the surrounding Euganean hills were under Napoleon's French military rule for only 8 months before it was ceded to the Austrians. This poem celebrates Napoleon and the liberation of Vicenza from the doges of Venice, coupling it to the French day of liberation (14 July, known as 26 Messidoro under the short-lived Republican calendar). Among the verses: "See us insulting the Venetian lion. We're not afraid anymore. And he bites his own lips, quavering helplessly in anger." The French "Comité de l'Instruction Publique" was dedicated to the removal of Church doctrine from public education.

Description:
Lucca: Tipografia Ducale, 1825. Original edition. Fine. Octavo (20 cm); 8 pages. In stiff green marbled-paper wraps. Epithalamion by the celebrated improvisational poet, Teresa Bandettini, who packed theaters and thrilled audiences with her spontaneous verses accompanied by dance. The marriage--between the 62-year-old Prince Maximilian of Saxony and the 23-year-old Maria Luisa Carlotta--took place in Lucca by proxy without the bride being present! (They had a second ceremony in person in Dresden later that year.) Max had been Luisa Carlotta's uncle by marriage. Anyway, the important thing here is the poetry of Teresa Bandettini, who had returned to her native Lucca after a career on the road as an improvvisatrice. The poem is a hymn to Hymen, the Greek deity associated with marriage and, of course, the wedding night.
