Description:
London: Printed, for the Author, By John Nichols...; And sold by J. Debrett...; J. Murray and S. Highley..., 1797. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 210 x 125 mms., pp. [iv], v - cxci [cxcii blank], 224, engraved frontispiece (by Isaac Taylor), recently rebound in quarter antique-style calf, morocco label, marbled boards; corner torn (without loss) from pp. 219 - 220, but a very good copy. Scevole de Sainte-Marthe (1536 - 1623), a lawyer and poet, first published this in 1584; it was translated and reprinted many times during the next 250 years. Tytler (1753/3 - 1808), a physician and poet as well, took Pope as his model for this translation, and the notes are sufficiently scholarly and medical to validate his assessment of the work. In his preface, he refers to the "meanness of the former version of this poem," which was "full of low disgusting phrases...." This "indelicate" language would have discouraged well-bred ladies from making use of the sound advice in the work. His… Read More

Kilmarnock: Printed by J. Wilson, Bookseller. 1785. FIRST KILMARNOCK EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 162 x 96 mms., pp. xviii, [19 - 21], 22 - 304, recently rebound in quarter calf, marbled boards, red leather label; a very good copy. The life is by Elijah Fenton, followed by "In Paradisu Admissam Summi Poetae Johannis Miltoni," a poem in Latin by Samuel Barrow, M. D. (?1625 - 1683). Barrow's verses were first printed in the second edition of Paradise Lost (1674), while Fenton's life was first published in 1725. The printer, John Wilson, would go on to publish the first edition of Burns's poems in Kilmarnock in 1786, and he reprinted Paradise Lost in 1789. Professor Patrick Scott writes "That same year, 1785, Wilson published his first literary title, again a reprint of a standard work in regular demand. This was his small-format edition of John Milton's Paradise Lost, first published in 1667, and one of the titles the London booksellers had tried in vain to protect from… Read More

Limoges Ancienne Maison Dalpayrat et Depelley, éditeurs J. Depelley , et Cte Succ** [no date] [1920]. 12mo, 98 x 64 mms., pp. [7] 8 -316 [317 - 320 index], including half-title with frontispiece on verso, four coloured illustrations measuring 80 x 48 mms. inserted between pages 128 and 129, bound in embossed bakelite or celluloid, with raised images on front cover, all edges gilt; front hinge cracked, paper a little browned, but a very good copy. These late 19th century prayer books bound in bakelite or celluloid - basically plastic - look a bit like ivory, but I don't think I've ever seen a book bound in genuine ivory. The inserted illustrations are not that common, nor is this particular example of a Paroissien Romain. OCLC locates only one copy in Spain, and two earlier examples from 1896.

A Londres Et se trouve à Paris Chez la Veuve Duchesne, Libraire, rue St. Jacques, au Temple du Gout. M. DCC. LIVII. 1767. 12mo, 182 x 110 mms., pp. [iv], xii, 416, engraved portrait of Hume between half-title and title-page, original (or contemporary) marbled wrappers, entirely uncut, hand written paper label on spine; extremities worn and frayed, joints a little soft, but a copy that would please most aficionados of books in their "as issued" state, straight from the printers. Hume's works were first translated into French in 1754, Discourse Politiques, which was followed by four other volumes, all translated by Eleazar de Mauvillon. The translation here is by J. A. J. de Boulmiers. For a useful commentary on the text, see the article by Michel Malherbe, "Hume's Reception in France," in Peter Jones, ed., The Reception of David Hume in Europe (2005). Of this "translation," he records, that "A speculative sceptic can be a fine man in the world.… Read More

Noribegae [Nürnberg], Sumptibus Simonis Halbmayer Bibliopole [no date] 1626. 12mo, 125 x 74 mms., pp. 132, later gray wrappers, but lacks front wrapper, most of spine destroyed, title-page soiled and fragile at margins. The Lutheran theologian Jacobus Herrenschmidt (1578 - 1641) first published this satire with the Elzevirs in 1621 as an investigation, so to speak, of the justly punished, more justly defeated, and most justly condemned name and origin of the Bacchanalia. My Latin is about as good as my Chamicuro (spoken by eight people in Peru), but I think there is a pun in the title and some jokey, specious references in the footnotes.

A Paris, Chez Saintin, Libraire..., 1813. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. Small, rectangular 8vo, 120 x 88, pp. [iv], 107 [108 blank], xcv [xcvi blank]; [iv], 106 [107 - 108 Table], xciv, engraved frontispiece in volumes and 31 other attractive and interesting engraved plates contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt spines. A very good set. These two volumes, with quite a bit of emphasis on the Aborigines of Australia, have very good engravings, but how much of a contribution to ethnography they make is difficult to assess. All of the plates seem to derive from a great variety of previous images, and one has probably to be slightly sceptical about their authenticity. For example, California is represented by a plate that seems more appropriate to a location in South America.

Oxonii, E Typographeo Clarendoniano, Impensis Stephani Fletcher..., 1728. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 198 x 112 mms., pp. [xxviii], 154 [155 - 158 index], fine engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title-page, contemporary calf, spine gilt to a fleur-de-lys motif, morocco label; slight wear to front joint, small nicks to top and base of spine, but generally a very good copy. Given that ESTC records at least 40 locations for this epistolary novel in Greek with Latin translation beneath in notes, one would expect to find a large corpus of scholarly work. The editor/author, the Jacobite conspirator, Charles Boyle, Fourth Earl of Orrery (1674 - 1731) made a name for himself in the dispute between the ancients and moderns, so memorably satarized in Swift's Battle of the Books. The attribution to Phalaris, the tyrant of Akragas (now Agrigento) in Sicily, from approximately 570 to 554 BC, is, of course, false. The Dean of Christ Church asked Boyle to translate the Epistles of Phalaris… Read More
