Description:
[Covelo, California]: The Yolla Bolly Press, 2000. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Schumaker, Ward. One of 200 copies, square quarto, 112 pp., signed by George Plimpton and Ward Schumaker. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), one of the most important figures in the Modernist movements in both literature and art, has given us a charming glimpse into life in France during the first third of the 20th century regaling us with the life of the average, everyday French. This work differs from her others in that it is a narration, told in a rambling style, touching upon "the behaviour of French cats, the thin arms of Frenchwomen, the paleness of French potatoes...to poignant war stories about children and horses" (n. b., quote from web site of the Yolla Bolly Press). Interestingly, The New Yorker review saw the memoir differently, as being "about who Americans are and what Americans think when they are not in Paris at all." As with all great writing, it is actually a bit of both, accompanied by twelve… Read More

[Vancouver, BC]: HM Editions [Heavenly Monkey], 2019. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. No. 23 of 30 copies, square large octavo size, [50 pp.] plus inserted drawings, signed by Barbara Hodgson and Claudia Cohen at the colophon, in a drop-back box. "HM Editions", i.e., "Heavenly Monkey", includes the tag line on their web site of "Publisher of elusive books". Truer words were never spoken, for the exceptionally high quality of the Heavenly Monkey publications, in every aspect, has gained for Rollin Milroy an enthusiastic and devoted following, with his books extremely difficult to obtain if one is not fortunate enough to be on the subscriber list. Barbara Hodgson and Claudia Cohen began an exploration in "decoration, materials and processes" with "Cutting Paper" (2013), "Decorating Paper" (2015) and "Folding Paper" (2017). This 2019 publication "focuses on traditional and modern systems of analyzing repeating decorative patterns. These systems - grid, proportion, tessellation, symmetry, motif, and… Read More

[San Francisco]: The Book Club of California [designed by Ward Ritchie, printed by the Castle Press], 1982. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Landacre, Paul. One of 650 copies, duodecimo size, 59 pp., with prospectus, original dust jacket, the Ex-Libris of Ken and Anna Belle Sexton, with ANS by Anna Belle Sexton. Paul Hambleton Landacre (1893-1963) achieved fame and national recognition for his linocuts, woodcuts and wood engravings. Largely self-taught, he came to the attention of Jake Zeitlin in the late 1920s who was well-connected in the art world and promoted Landacre's work. Rockwell Kent considered him "the finest wood engraver in America" and Ward Ritchie would often commission him for his projects (n.b., quote per Wiki). He would receive several awards during his lifetime, including those from the American Institute of Graphic Arts "Fifty Books of the Year", the Library of Congress, and the Print Club of Philadelphia. This work, a short tribute to Landacre, opens with "Here is… Read More

Description:
London: Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press, 1937. Pictorial boards. Good +. Preston, Chloe. Large octavo size, [12] pp. Chloe Preston provided the illustrations for twelve "Peek-A-Boo" books (per Baumgarten); interestingly, this title not listed. A scarce book, as of this writing there is one copy online of "The Peek-A-Boos In Camp", however, no copies of this "Play Book" which is clearly an abridged version of "In Camp" published as a board book for very young children. Our search of OCLC lists only a single copy of this "Play Book" (held by the University of Oxford), and our date comes from that record (which is, itself, "suggested by [a] Bodleian Library copyright stamp"). Information on Chloe Preston (1887-1969) seems a bit elusive; from various online sources we gleen that she was born in Britain "in a gentrified English country environment". Her charming illustrations of the Chunkies (anthropomorphic wooden dolls) and the Peek-a-Boos have "clear simple outlines and bright colours,… Read More

This volume is the first edition published in the United States with illustrations by Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964); it would be reprinted several times and the true first is now somewhat scarce in the marketplace. During Attwell's career she would illustrate well over thirty books, in addition to posters, postcard and greeting cards. New York: J.H. Sears & Company, Inc, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Rule, Christopher. The first edition, first printing of the Rule-illustrated edition, quarto size, 243 pp., with dust jacket. Everyone is familiar with the story of "Pinocchio", the wooden puppet who came to life. Originally published in serial form as "The Story of a Puppet", with the first installment on July 7, 1881, the story was first published in book form in 1883. "Pinocchio" is considered a classic of children's literature, with some seeing therein a "universal icon and a metaphor of the human condition" (n.b., quote per Wiki). The author, Carlo Lorenzini (1826-1890), adopted the name of his home town of Collodi as his pen name; although he began studies to enter the priesthood, he determined that not to be the right path for him. His involvement in Italian politics during the unification of Italy led him to publish political newspapers, which, upon becoming disenchanted with politics, led him to… Read More

Description:
Chicago: The Reilly and Britton Company, 1912. Cardboard covers. Very good. Duodecimo size, [95] pp., inscribed by Tiffany Blake (dedicatee). Bert Leston Taylor (1866-1921), humourist, poet, and columnist, writes this ode to the American wilderness, discerning not only the beauty and inspiration found in walking through the woods, but also that which can be found in smoking a pipe at the same time. A renowned columnist for the "Chicago Tribune", Taylor brings his wit and rich descriptions to this series of essays; each essay is preceded by a black-and-white illustration of scenes of nature and a stanza of poetry. This volume is inscribed by Tiffany Blake (1870-1943), to whom the volume is dedicated by the author, and who was the long-time chief editorial writer for the "Chicago Tribune". Blake inscribed the volume to "Miss Head", possibly Anna Head, the founder of the Anna Head School for Girls in Berkeley, California, in 1887 (now Head-Royce School); the inscription begins "In remembrance of" and… Read More

[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2009. Limited Edition. No binding. Fine. Lemaire, Angela. No. 3 of 25 copies for sale, folio size, 52 pp. The story begins: "I was present during the Great Plague of 1665, It took away my life," he said.
