[Blaxploitation] Pam Grier Coffy Movie Archive of 3 Related Items from the film. American International Pictures, Inc., 1973. This archive includes two U.S. large lobby cards and one vibrant Japanese-edition broadside. Lobby cards measure 10" x 14", the broadside 10" x 7". Coffy was a 1973 American Blaxplotation film centering upon a femme fatale's vengeance against a heroin dealer who birthed her sister's addiction. This film, among others, would help boost Grier's career as a lead Black female femme fatale. Researcher Karen Ross asserts that the film "let black audiences enjoy the sight of heroes kicking the white system and winning even while condemning the violence and recognized the implausibility. It allowed blacks the ultimate escape to cheer on the heroine that fought corruption and crime and then leave the theatre to be blighted by the racism in society." One lobby card captures Grier in a plunge top, bold jewelry, and voluminous hair, alongside co-star Robert Doqui. Doqui sports flashy… Read More

[African-American Film], [Blaxploitation] Pam Grier Archive of 6 Lobby Card Photographs. American International Pictures, 1973 - 1975. Each lobby card measures 10" x 8". Films include Coffy, Friday Foster and Sheba, Baby. Each of the films were noteworthy and paved the way for Black women in leading action roles. Grier's stylish look and attitude made her an iconic figure in 1970s film, especially in the Blaxploitation genre. Her groovy 70's look, quick wit, and sharp tongue were all emphasized in these films, reshaping the often negative, stereotypical portrayals of Black women in its time. Two Lobby Cards in color show Grier in Sheba, Baby, both vibrant and vintage showcasing her 70s aesthetic. In one, she appears on the boat wearing her iconic cut-off Hawaiian shirt. Two Lobby Cards in color from Friday Foster feature Grier, one in her pink suit standing next to Yaphet Kotto. On the Education of Women. A Paper Read by Mrs. William Grey, at the Meeting of the Society of Arts." William Ridgeway: London, 1871. Pamphlet. 64 pages. 5.5" x 8" inches. Maria Georgina Grey was a British writer and women's education advocate. In this paper she writes "The subject I have specially to call your attention to this evening is the low condition of female education, the inadequate provision made for it out of the endowments of the country, and the difficulty of obtaining support from the general public for any scheme having for its object the higher education of women." Much of the paper concerns education for girls as a path to long-term freedom, "It is easy to laugh at old maids, it is easy to praise them as the sisters of mercy of life, it is not easy to measure the amount of silence suffering, of slow wasting away of hope, of energy, of faculty, as the woman sees her youth passing away, the boundless horizon of earlier years narrowing more and more, middle age finding her as helplessly… Read More

McWilliams, Carey. Pamphlet: What About Our Japanese-Americans? New York, First Edition. 1944. Blue wrappers. Public Affairs Committee. 31 pages. Includes some small black and white illustrations of the Japanese-American plight during the war with captions underneath. Pamphlet was written two years after the U.S. began putting Japanese people in camps. American journalist Carey McWilliams collaborated with the Institute of Pacific Relations, one of the first institutions that promoted educational material about people of the Pacific regions. This organization helped the United States better understand and cooperate with Pacific nationals during an increasingly rocky geopolitical climate. Here, McWilliams argues that the forced internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II was not only unjust but unconstitutional. He states that the mass evacuation and internment were based on racial prejudice and negative stereotypes rather than evidence of any actual threat to national security. Pamphlet has… Read More
