Original red pebble-grained cloth, rebacked, highly decorated and lettered in gilt; 10 concertina-style co-joint mounted albumen prints of original photographs forming a continuous panorama (25 x 340 cm); cloth a little rubbed, the images very well preserved. 'Pascal Sébah (1823–1886) was a photographer in Constantinople (Istanbul). He was born there to a Syrian Catholic father and an Armenian mother. In 1857, he opened his first photography studio, “El Chark Société Photographic,” in Constantinople at 439 Grande Rue de Pera. In 1860, the French photographer, Antoine Laroche, directed the studio. In 1873, Sébah opened another studio in Cairo. Pascal Sébah suffered a stroke in 1883 and his brother, Cosmi, took charge of the business until Jean (1872–1947), Pascal’s son who also became a photographer, was old enough to inherit the business. [Beijing, Distributed by Guozi Shudian. 1956]. 22 mounted and hand-coloured paper-cuts, each protected with a glassine sheet, plates measuring 227 by 158 mm, together with 5-page booklet on Chinese paper-cuts in general and one with 3 pages detailing the paper-cuts from Weihsin (text in Chinese, English, French and German), all housed in the original publishers folder of patterned boards, cloth-covered edges, bone pegs and textile ties; overall in very good condition with the colours surprisingly fresh. Paper-cutting is one of the oldest and most popular folk arts in China, and can be geographically divided into southern and northern styles, represented here by examples from Hebei Province.

Landscape large folio, 613 x 325mm; a white pictorially decorated folder printed in colours, lettered to flap in black, with a full-size photographic illustration to one side, containing 9 individual colour-printed posters on card, with text running boldly above in red and black, the whole forming an interchangeable panorama designed to be assembled in a multitude of combinations to form a variety of processions; the folder lightly soiled, dusted, and palely foxed, with small edge wear; internally all components present and in near fine condition; a rare survival. Publisher's red cloth panelled and decorated in black to spine and upper cover and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed with dust-wrapper, not known to the bibiographer; pp. xii, 185. [3]; with a total of 75 fine coloured plates with captioned guards and line drawings throughout the text; the cloth, as to be expected very fresh, wrapper with a few marginal flaws and darkened to spine; internally a little spotted, and with offsetting from endpapers. [Paris, Ledot Jeune, c. 1860]. Oblong large 4to. Original brown morocco-backed pebble-grained cloth, spine with raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, front cover ruled in blind and lettered in gilt; 50 tinted lithographic plates; light rubbing to extremities, front free endpapers renewed; first plate minimally spotted, one with short maginal tear; otherwise a very good, clean and complete copy. Very rare pictorial album of Paris during the the Second Empire, the Paris of Jacques Offenbach, urban mass culture and immense wealth and poverty, as described by Zola. The very few albums with that title we were able to trace contain fewer plates, sometimes 48, 45 or only 28. The numbering is not consecutive, which might indicate that the publisher Ledot compiled albums on demand and for different markets. Photography is certainly the basis for many images, with the speeding carriages and the moving crowd of Paris added by the artists.

London, Stanford's Georgraphical Establishment, c. 1910. Colour-lithographic map (72 x 56 cm), linen-backed and dissected into 20 sections folding back into the original cloth folder with Philip's, the Fleet Street map dealers' printed label on front cover; only light rubbing to folder and ms name to label, the map itself only lightly toned in places. This map with a scale of 1 : 5,274,720 covers the area South of the Guianas, part of the Mato Grosso down to Paraguay and Desterro on the Atlantic. The provinces are distinguished by colours, with the borders in red.

London: Edward Arnold & Co., 1924. 8vo.; publisher's dark red finely-ribbed cloth lettered in black to spine and upper cover, plain edges; pp. [iv], [5]-325 + [iii], publisher's adverts.; rubbed at corners and along spine; sporadic foxing, moreso to the prelims, a little to the outer edge; a very good copy, lacking the very scarce dust jacket. First edition of Forster's famous novel, one of 5000 copies. A Passage to India deals with the complex themes set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement during the 1920s. Despite being controversial on release due to its depictions of relationships between coloniser and colonised, the book went on to win the 1924 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, and in modern days holds an important place in discussions of orientalist and postcolonial literature. Time magazine included the novel in its "All Time 100 Novels" list.

'Plastic binding' illustrated boards; pp. 41, highly illustrated, including a fold out photographic birds-eye view of the exhibition island in the Pacific; well-preserved; provenance: ownership inscription by Florence Kekule, dated October, 1939 on title, together with letters aof appreciation by the Brazilian Commissioner adressed to Florence Dellos, the head waitress at the Brazilian pavillion, and a staff list of the pavillion. Very rare and beautiful. The exposition had the theme A Pageant of the Pacific and celebrated the completion of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge with this exhibition, located on an artificial island in San Francisco Bay. The Brazilian pavillion, a masterpiece of modernism, contained some spectacularly designed features, such as a relief map of South America, and the snazzy Café Brazil, complete with band. "Holinshed's Chronicles", best known as one of Shakespeare's major sources, contains one of the few accounts of Elizabeth's reign written during her lifetime. A contemporary history, it was subjected to censorship by the Privy Council. In this facsimile edition, a compilation based on this portion of the "Chronicles" in copies in the Huntington's collection as well as the British Library and Cambridge University Library, censored and substituted passages are represented between two covers for the first time. A series of delicate and beautiful images of Beijing by the German photographer von Perckhammer (1895-1965), depicting the city's architecture, inhabitants, and landmarks, with polyglot titles beneath. First edition, very uncommon. An impressive overview of the subject, from Niebuhr to the 1890s by the archaeologist David George Hogarth who was from 1909 on keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and president of the Royal Geographical Society. During the First World War he worked at the Arab Bureau in Cairo, launching the Arab Revolt. Provenance: Royal Institution blind-stamp to title-page, release stamp on lower fly-leaf. Accessioned on March, 31, 1904.

Original cloth, ornamented and lettered in gilt; pp. 263, 15 (publisher's catalogue}, frontispiece in photogravure with tissue guard; a litle ofseting from endpapers, evenly a little toned due to paper stock, as usual; a very good copy of a very uncommon work. First edition of this first-hand account of life among Yemenis, written by a British advisor in the Yemen and South West Arabia. 'I was inspired by a love of these Tribesmen of Al Yemen with whom I have worked for ten years, including a very close sojourn in their midast of three years' he writes in the preface (p. 7). One of the better insights into Southern Aranbian society, customs, family life, food and drink.

Original blue cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. xii, [4], 180, plates after photographs; light browning to endpapers with offsetting to adjacent pages, name on half title, otherwise very good. First edition, very rare. The son of one of the most celebrated Victorian sculptors and medallists embarked on a rather unusual tour. In 1901 he travelled with a civil servant from the embassy at Constantinople 'to try a British subject in Baghdad' (p. vii). Off the beaten track he visits Muscat and Bahrain, Basrah and the Marsh Arbas, Baghdad, the Euprates and Kerbala, Amara, then hopping over to the Persian side of the Gulf, venturing inland before returning to Muscat. The second part of the book, starting on p. 105 is a journey from New Zealand to the South sea islands of Tonga, the Vava'u island group, Samoa, and Fiji, with encounters of cannibals and two plates depicting them going about their business. Original blue cloth; pp. [4, on pink paper], x, 372, [2], tinted folding map, many views of coastlines based on the drawings done for the 1914 edition; a fine copy. This pilot guide had appeared first in 1870, and this is the last edition in this format, as the coastlines and coastal towns started to change beyond recognition. Apart from the obviously necessary information for navigating the Gulf the volume contains sections on trade, population, politics, languages, natural resources, and fisheries, including pearl fishing.

[Paris], C. Motte [for Arnault, c. 1825]. Original lithograph by Charles Champion after the 1804 oil painting by Gros, image size c. 31 x 42 cm; very clean and with wide margins. This print was published in Antoine-Vincent Arnault's monumental Vie Politique et Militaire de Napoleon, which appeared from 1822 to 1826. The playwright Arnault had been a companion of Napoleon since the Ionian mission and Egypt campaign of 1797, and was involved in Napoleon's coup d'état of the 18th Brumaire. The print shows Napoleon during a striking scene which is supposed to have occurred in Jaffa on 11 March 1799, when General Bonaparte visited his sick soldiers at the Armenian Saint Nicholas Monastery. Other sources claim that he ordered some soldiers to be 'put down' by opium overdose.
