Decorated end pages are free and clear of any handwriting or bookplates. Pages are clean, no handwriting, no tears. The book exterior show spotting along the page edges in the front board has a stain in the upper right quadrant, along with the tear in the cloth that is exposing the under board. Because of this book condition was downgraded to a good minus. See photos.

New York: W. A. Townsend and Company, 1861. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. See photos for condition details. Large hardcover. Thick original tooled brown leather boards with decorations filled in black, gilt lettering on all sides. Five raised bands on spine. All exterior page edges gilt. Marbled end pages and front and rear as well as gilt decoration on leather edges of pastedowns. Edges of exterior spine show wear with top edge chipping. Contains high quality steel engravings, illustrated on steel and wood from original drawings. First edition, showing the date 1861 on both copyright and title page. Book interior condition is VG+, pages are toned of the below foxing is present and there are no signatures or bookplates. Unfortunately, front cover detached itself when we were inspecting the book for photographing. Because of this we have lowered the condition down to fair. See photos.

New York: The Junior Literary Guild, 1931. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG+/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Henry Pitz. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. DJ is quite tattered and faded with numerous chips and tears, the worst being along the top edge of the rear of the book. Orange cloth boards underneath show toning/fading to the edges and spine but are otherwise clean. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No hinge issues, no signatures or bookplates, no library markings. The only evidence of handwriting found is on the front end page where there is a faint indentation of a price once penciled in the corner, and then later erased. Pages are toned due to age but are clean.

Hardcover, blue cloth boards show fading along edges and spine, some spotting is also present. Edges and corners show like bumps/wear. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting, nothing torn or loose. Text pages are mostly clean except for some moderate foxing on the title page which was caused by reaction with the frontispiece paper. All illustrations have been verified as being present.

Includes various photos and maps, including fold outs. No remainder marks or handwriting noted in book. Our original store price was penciled inside front cover but has since been erased. Spine shows light spot on lower rear-could be wear or dampstain. 30 listed plates with an additional 9 maps at the rear including one fold-out.

Washington DC: Pan American Union, 1913. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, tan cloth boards decorated on front, text on spine. Boards show considerable soiling and spotting along with edge and corner wear. Exterior is in pretty rough shape but interior binding is good, no hinge cracks. What makes this book unique is the bookplate. The previous owner's bookplate is from General Daingerfield Parker. Gen. Parker was a General in the United States Army and was awarded for gallant and meritorious services in the battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. On page 25 there is a note penciled next to the photo of one of the steamships which states "Have made several trips on her". Chicago, IL: The Inland Printer Company, 1925. Hardcover. VG-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, green cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior cloth shows chipping and loss to the shine along the edges of both boards and spine area. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. Decorated in pages in front and rear are free of any bookplates. Generically inscribed and signed by the author on the half title page. The book was property of George H. Carter (The United States Government Printing Office Public Printer) and in the lower right corner is lightly penciled "Carter - Williamson 12 4 56". These books came from the estate of Mr. Carter and his books were mostly penciled with "Carter - Williams". Remaining pages of book are clean with no issues. Rear board has numerous pages showing the point system rolled with silver tipped pens, book also contains numerous foldouts and illustrations.

Philadelphia, PA: National Publishing Company, 1869. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Light brown cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows scuffing and soiling and heavy wear to the cloth, particularly on edges and corners where there is a lot of splitting of the cloth. Top and bottom of spine also has chipping. The interior binding has some issues, though nothing catastrophic. Hinge at the rear board is starting to crack (front board hinge is good) and page 27 is offset with the exterior along the edge showing fraying and chipping - so that page's binding may be a bit fragile. Chicago, IL: Thompson & Thomas, 1891. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, light green cloth boards ornately decorated in black and gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows handling wear which includes darkening of the cloth bumps to edges and corners. The internal binding of the text pages is good but the hinges are cracked at both the front and rear boards. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting found. Pages are quite toned due to age and type of paper used, there is some foxing and smudge marks present as well. The title page and frontispiece both have a corner fold at the upper outside corner. These have not been straightened out out of concerns of paper was too brittle.

London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1886. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original brown cloth boards with gilt to spine. Exterior shows edge and corner wear and rear board has large section blistered. The worst part of the exterior as the cloth on the spine as it is very fragile and very brittle, with numerous cracks in chips present. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues other than some minor pulling. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings. Several quadrants of pages are still uncut, mainly in the front end very back of book. Pages are toned due to age and foxing is present. Some pages show minor corner folds and others show small corner tears, likely caused by pages being not fully cut at the time of printing.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1913. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Charles Dana Gibson. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, first edition thus with a single publication date of October 1913 along with the printing code I-N (I=September, N=1913). Green cloth boards show very little wear with the only issue being faint stain in the upper left corner of the front board. Corners are sharp the spine edges show a bit of bumping/wear. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting etc. Pages are overall clean though the frontispiece/tissue guard/title page has a brown mark which has affected all three pages. There is also a small stain on the rear pastedown. Attractive copy with the illustration on the front still having bright colors.

New York: Claude Kendell, Inc., 1936. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Milt Gross. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. The original price of $1.50 is still present on the front flap. DJ is borderline fine condition and the only reason it was lowered to NF is because of a small bump with a fractional tear on the rear right corner along with a quarter-inch tear near the right upper corner. Greenish tan cloth boards underneath or clean though there is some edge and spine toning. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight like the book was never read. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting etc. Pages are toned due to age and type of paper used. Stated first edition on the copyright page. The condition is quite impressive, considering the age of the book.

Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1917. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, marbled paper covered boards half bound in dark gray cloth with paper label on spine. Exterior shows only minor handling with a very late crease on the backboard and a few chips to the paper label. Internal binding is good and pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates but there are a couple dozen pages very small checkmarks on the outside edges of paragraphs. Most of these are done in pencil and can be easily erased and I saw at least 3 pages where it was done in red pen.

Hardcover, green cloth boards show only minimal handling wear, mainly just some light spotting and edge bumps. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight, like the book was never used. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no remainder marks. The only evidence of handwriting is on the front end page, where you can just barely see where a price was once penciled and then later erased. The foldout chart at page 162 is present and in excellent shape. Please note: there are several pages in here that have handwritten corrections. This is the way the book was printed as these are reprints of articles with corrections, additions and new material by several of the contributors.

Interior pages are toned and there are some minor corner folds. Spine is wrinkled and also has tears. No signatures or bookplates noted. Book has been placed in a protective archival clear sleeve.
