With the outbreak of war in 1775 Howe was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina Regiment, later becoming commanding general of the Southern Department. His forces were defeated by the British in Savannah in December 1778 and he rode north to join Washington's army. As division commander in the New York Highlands he participated in the defence of West Point. He presided over the courts-martial of Generals Benedict Arnold and Alexander McDougall. This is a detailed biography with details of his political party, the National Union. He nominally headed the government of Norway during the occupation, and was put on trial during the purge in Norway after World War II. Being found guilty of charges including murder and high treason against the Norwegian state, he was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad on 24 October 1945.
