Lisbon, Na Nova Officina de João Rodrigues Neves, 1809.. First Edition in Portuguese. 8°, disbound. In very good condition. 15 pp. *** First edition in Portuguese of a work published the previous year at Valencia, as ¿Que se debe a Valencia? Following the brutal massacre of hundreds of Madrileños on May 3, 1808, spontaneous uprisings against the French erupted throughout Spain. In Valencia, mobs butchered over 300 French citizens. General Moncey was sent with 29,000 troops to pacify the area, but was forced to retreat. The author of this pamphlet mentions uprisings elsewhere (Asturias, Jaen, Tudela, Segovia, Santander, etc.), but extols the superiority of Valencians, who apparently repelled the French using little more than raw courage. *** Ayres Magalhães de Sepúlveda, Dicionário bibliográfico da Guerra Peninsular III, 128. Lisbon, Impressão de Eugenio Augusto, 1828.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, stitched. Small woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Uncut. In very good condition. 19 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. In the dispute over who should succeed D. João VI as king of Portugal, the author favors D. Miguel, who reigned as D. Miguel I (1828-1834), over D. Pedro IV (Emperor D. Pedro I of Brazil). This pamphlet includes much discussion of the relationship of Brazil to Portugal, and the behavior of Brazilians and D. Pedro. This densely written pamphlet evoked several responses: Refutação do monstruoso e revolucionario escripto impresso em Londres, intitulado, Quem he o legitimo Rei de Portugal? Read More

Lisbon, em a Nova Impressão da Viuva Neves e Filhos, 1823.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 8°, stitched. Small ornament on title page. Uncut. Light soiling. Overall in fine condition. 29 pp., (1 blank l.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. A spirited response to the report of the commission appointed to recommend how to implement the Lei da Reforma Regular that was passed in 1823. The anonymous author finds the commissioners' comments despropositos and the law's provisions equally absurd. The points he attacks are: 1) the idea that the government should be able to send any member of any religious order to any monastery, so that (for example) Capuchins, Augustinians, and Carthusians might all be lodged together; 2) the notion that religious houses do not have the means or financial acumen to support themselves; and 3) the complaint of the commissioners that some friars they spoke to were rude to them.
