Description:
London: Printed for Alex. Hogg, [1778].. 12mo, 289, (1) pp. Frontispieces to both parts and 93 plates, outer edge of a few plates with mild wear. Contemporary sheep, a little worn, neatly rebacked. Originally published in 1635 with "Hieroglyphics..." appearing three years after that. Wildly popular, they were derived from a pair of Jesuit books which a friend had brought back from the continent. "It is Quarles's historical achievement to have established in protestant England the dominant type of the Catholic baroque emblems representing the encounters of Amor Divinus or Divine Love and the Soul. These books were acceptable to moderate Catholics and protestants because they promoted the general tenets of the Christian life, not controversial doctrine"
