The editor Gilbert Wakefield (1756-1801), Unitarian controversialist, was "one of the two leading British scholars of his time, the other being Richard Porson" (ODNB). Wakefield taught at Hackney College, a dissenting academy where William Hazlitt was briefly a student, and later edited a number of classical and theological texts, including Horace, Lucretius, and Virgil. A Survey of the Cities of London & Westminster. John Strype., 1755.. John Stow's, A Survey of London, was first published in 1598, with a second edition following in 1603. Stow's most famous work, it is an evocative 'perambulation' of the streets of the Tudor capital, which forms the main framework of the book. The huge growth of the metropolis, the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the subsequent rebuilding of the City made an updating of the Survey highly desirable. It was to answer this need that John Strype (1643-1737), the ecclesiastical historian and biographer, published a new, hugely expanded version of Stow's Survey of London in 1720. Copper engraving. Qatar: Qatar General Petroleum Corporation,, 1987. Advice on how to behave during Ramadan Very scarce internal memo, dated 25 April 1987, written by personnel manager J. I. A. Al-Buainain and addressed to all expatriate employees and families. The document provides guidance for the corporation's non-Muslim employees on behaviour during Ramadan, providing a summary of the fast's origin and significance, its place in the Muslim calendar, Eid al Fitr, and emphasizing the respect and discretion required during it. The principal aim of the memo is to warn personnel that they should behave considerately and avoid causing offence: "As guests in the State of Qatar, the expatriate community must at all times respect the customs and expectations of their Hosts". For the emperor Qianlong, the longest-serving of the Qing Manchu emperors, this codification project was intertwined with his broader efforts to consolidate political power and "shape the cultural orientation of court and country" (McDermott, p. 355),. First edition, sole printing, of this hard to find Mao-era tourist guide to the resort city of Qingdao, demonstrating that leisure travel and commercial advertising, including for the city's famous Tsingtao Beer, remained alive and well under Communism. Of the 10,000 copies originally printed, few have survived: WorldCat finds two and none are traceable in commerce. Qingdao emerged as a popular tourist destination in the late Qing and Republican periods when the city was administered as a German and then a Japanese colony. Its beautiful beaches, strong transport links, vibrant shopping scene, and nearby attractions continued to appeal to urban travellers during the 1950s and 1960s. The 'May Seventh Directive' is the name given to a letter sent by Mao to Marshal Lin Biao in 1966 calling for the army to become an ideological bastion of the unfolding Cultural Revolution. The tooling on the spine, featuring a simple gilt flower surrounded by leaves and stars in the compartments, was popular and resembles the style of the celebrated royal bookbinder Louis Doceur, active in Paris at the time. The work is part of a series of finely printed Latin classics produced by a consortium of French printers - including the workshop of David and Coustellier - who sought to imitate the style of the Dutch family of printers Elzevir (active 1587-1681), as Elzevir's small-format editions were becoming uncommon. The play provided the name for the confectionery first manufactured in 1936. The play was first filmed in 1927 and a second adaptation, starring Katharine Hepburn, was released in 1937. Reviewing the volume in December 1913, the Times Literary Supplement noted that "with Hugh Thomson's irresistible illustrations in colour it is a book not merely to like, but to love". Some of the earliest printed records of the great educator's teaching methods First editions of three scarce mimeographed lectures, the notes made by students of Feynman very early in his academic career, preceding the famous Lectures on Physics by over a decade. The present set has an excellent provenance, being from the library of Feynman's colleague Dr Charles Hewitt Dix (1905-1984), professor of geophysics at Caltech from 1948 to 1973, who clearly attended the lectures. The trio are appropriately preserved in two contemporary spring binders and bound with a large quantity of meticulous handwritten notes and problem sets, presumably by Dix. Together they offer unique insight into the reception of Feynman's teaching and provide crucial documentation of the completion of his theory of quantum electrodynamics, his emerging interest in particle physics, and the evolution of Feynman diagrams. Published in an edition of 250 copies, it is rare in original wrappers and with advertisements at the end. The book includes the first appearance of "The Phantom 'Rickshaw'" and "The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes, C. E.". Kipling described the conception of this work in his autobiography, Something of Myself (1937). He noted that "in the cold weather of [18]85 we four made up a Christmas annual... which pleased us a good deal and attracted a certain amount of attention. The translator of this edition, John Payne (1842-1916), was a poet and friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Payne took an interest in limited edition publishing, and co-founded the Villon Society with a small circle of friends in order to publish his translations of the works of French medieval poet François Villon; the Society later published the work for which he is best known, his translation of the Arabian Nights, between 1882 and 1884.
