New York: Springer-Verlag, 1994. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good plus condition (in very good plus dustjacket), spine jacket faintly faded, minimal edgewear. 297 pp. By H.O. Lancaster, professor of mathematical statistics, University of Sydney, Australia. This wide-ranging volume surveys the immense impact that quantitative methods have had on the development of modern biological and medical science. He shows how mathematics, principally through counting and measurement, and statistics have profoundly influenced the emergence of key ideas and theories. Since no background knowledge of biological anatomy, physiology or disease is required, this volume is essentially a self-contained account. As befits such a wide-ranging volume, amongst the topics covered are: epidemiology, the classification of disease, microbiology, genetics, clinical trials, death… Read More

Brisbane, Salisbury: Boolarong Press, 2015. Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white text-photos (includes frontispiece), glossy paper, minor edgewear. 305 pp. This is the story of Edward and Eliza Lord who came to Moreton Bay in 1844, then a remote convict outpost as it was opened up for free settlement. They were from Lancashire merchant families, and had invested their inheritances in NSW lands and a Sydney merchant firm, but just before the drought and crash of 1841. They moved North to rebuild their fortunes, settling at Kangaroo Point before moving to the Darling Downs to start new commercial interests. The author, Janet Spillman, is their great-great-grand-daughter, and she explores how Queensland moulded the Lord family's lives, and the way family members helped in the colony's development.
