Leiden: Joannem van Kerckhem, 1737. First edition. 4to, 20x16cm, [xxiv], 384, [32]pp. Title in red and black with engraved vignette illustration. Contemporary calf, sympathetically rebacked with original spine label laid in. Former owner's bookplate and stamp to front pastedown, lacking front free endpaper else clean internally. Boards a bit rubbed at corners. An attractive copy. Perhaps one of Dutch writer, Cornelius van Bynkershoek's (1673-1743), most important and influential works, being a study on international law of armed conflict.  The first part is one of the first evaluations of modern laws of war, dealing with the seizing of power, sovereignty, violence against civilians, prisoners of war, etc.  Full title is Quaestionum Juris Publici, Libri Duo, Quorum Primus Est de Rebus Bellicis, Secundus de Rebus Varii Argumenti. This copy from the historic law library of Maurice E. Locke (1861-1919) of Dallas, TX.  Locke, a bibliophile in addition to his trade, established his practice in 1891… Read More

Description:
New York: Vantage Press, 1970. First edition. 8vo, 105pp. Publisher's blue cloth, spine stamped in black, illustrated dust jacket. Bookstore ticket to rear pastedown, single mark to margin of contents page, modest wear to boards else nearly fine in like jacket which shows wear at spine ends and some toning. Science fiction novella in which two Quasarians from a remote celestial body travel to earth and learn of "the organized harmony that underlies all instances of natural life," which is lacking in their own environment.  Charles Burnell Olds (1872-1971) was active in Japanese missionary work before taking up writing.  He formed a study group in Japan of Christian ministers and Buddhist and Shinto priests.  This idea of merging Eastern and Western thought and religion are on display in his writings, including this, his only work in the genre of science fiction.  Uncommon. Reginald 10956.
