Reid had come to the United States in his early twenties, reaching New Orleans in January, 1840, where he pursued various occupations as shopkeeper, slave overseer, shoolmaster, and actor.

Merle Johnson, in his bibliography of Mark Twain writes, "The play was started at the suggestion of Mark Twain's first publisher, Webb, but was never completed. It is not included in any of the author's other published volumes." p. 106. This work includes a facsimile letter by Twain explaining why he was never able to finish the work, A near fine copy of a scarce work.
