The Hunter-Trader-Trapper Co, 1939. First edition. Softcover. New. New Old Stock. First edition. With discussion on the maintenance of territory for quail, modern farming's effect on quail, the best quail gun, and much more. In publisher's original printed green wrappers. A scarce title by Ozark Ripley, pseudonym of John Baptiste de Macklot Thompson. Thompson was born in St. Louis of French parentage and was sent to France to attend school, but returned to this country early and moved to the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, then an unsettled wilderness. "While acting as guide for hunters and fisherman, Thompson became acquainted with three noted novelists, James Oliver Curwood, Emerson Hough and Jack London. The trio encouraged young Thompson to write and London gave him the pen name which he has made famous. Thompson was a professional trainer of bird dogs and was an authority on fly and bait casting. Hunters and anglers from all parts of the world had been his guests at his summer home in… Read More

Description:
Crossroad Publishing Company, 1997. Softcover. Like New. 6x0x9. Postulating a new theology is, by any standard, no mean feat. Attempting to define, as O'Murchu valiantly does, a theology that embraces the latest advances in quantum physics can only be considered a task of Herculean proportions. While well-intentioned and well-researched, this book extrapolates farther and farther away from quantum mechanical insights into realms which, at times, are quite speculative in order to create a basis for a quantum theology. For example, O'Murchu begins his system with synergy, the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, a principle that is not inherently a quantum mechanical conclusion at all. O'Murchu gives his argument sharper focus when he describes Stephen Hawking's concept of the birth of the universe, and he does a workmanlike job of creating what might best be called a cosmological theology.

Description:
Harvard University Press, 1993. Hardcover. Like New/Very Good+. 6x0x9. The more science tells us about the world, the stranger it looks. Ever since physics first penetrated the atom, early in this century, what it found there has stood as a radical and unanswered challenge to many of our most cherished conceptions of nature. It has literally been called into question since then whether or not there are always objective matters of fact about the whereabouts of subatomic particles, or about the locations of tables and chairs, or even about the very contents of our thoughts. A new kind of uncertainty has become a principle of science. This book is an original and provocative investigation of that challenge, as well as a novel attempt at writing about science in a style that is simultaneously elementary and deep. It is a lucid and self-contained introduction to the foundations of quantum mechanics, accessible to anyone with a high school mathematics education, and at the same time a rigorous discussion… Read More

Description:
W. H. Freeman, 1995. Softcover. Like New. 5x1x10. From one of the architects of the new science of simplicity and complexity comes a highly personal, unifying vision of the natural world. As a theoretical physicist, Murray Gell-Mann has explored nature at its most fundamental level. His achievements include the 1969 Nobel Prize for work leading up to his discovery of the quark—the basic building block of all atomic nuclei throughout the universe. But Gell-Mann is a man of many intellectual passions, with lifelong interests in fields that seek to understand existence at its most complex: natural history, biological evolution, the history of language, and the study of creative thinking. The Quark and the Jaguar is an engaging, elegantly written introduction to the life's work of one of this century's most accomplished and influential scientists. This is Gell-Mann's own story of finding the connections between the basic laws of physics and the complexity and diversity of… Read More

Description:
University of Oklahoma Press, 1991. Softcover. Like New. 96x8x144. There is a need as well as a reason for this book, says the author, since "there are no other books covering the history of the Quarter Horse. All that is available is an article here and a chapter there. If you know the past, you can understand today and anticipate tomorrow. For this reason the serious Quarter Horse breeder and enthusiast cannot use his horses wisely today, or mate them intelligently for tomorrow, without knowledge of his breed's origin, development, and principal bloodlines. The background of this great American breed is not only information of vital interest to the consummate horseman, but also a fascinating story in its own right." The author traces the European origins and, from Colonial times, the development and use of the Quarter Horse in the United States. He covers the outstanding horses, performance records, early breeders, and the establishment of the American Quarter Horse Association.… Read More

Northern Publishing, 1999-12-31. Paperback. Very Good. 8x5x0. Signed by Editor. Some slight edgewear; else in Very Good+ condition. This is a history of the early days of Alaska's big game hunting as well as the beginning of bush plane use. Jack Wilson began guiding and flying bush planes in the Territorial days when the great game herds were still being assessed. Then he guided throughout the heyday and eventual downturn of the trophy sheep hunting in the Wrangell Mountains, all the while operating his air charter business and becoming on of Alaska's premier bush pilots. These stories--including that of the World Record Dall sheep taken by Harry L. Swank, Jr.-- are written with Jack's remarkable background in his honest, classic style. The book relates progress in Alaska, from mineral exploration to outlaw guides, along with a smattering of hunting advice and humor. It is required reading for those wishing to know and understand the rich history of Alaska. Signed by the Editor, Tony… Read More

Description:
Western Reflections Publishing Company, 1993. Softcover. Like New. 5x0x8. The History of "Ouray -- Gem of the Rockies" is a fascinating tale of the typical boom and bust cycles of all of Colorado's major mining towns. Silver brought the first prospectors to the beautiful valley, but gold kept Ouray from becoming a ghost town after the Silver Crash of 1893. The town rebounded because of the demand for metals during World War I and II but slipped into an economic depression after each war. Although tourism was always important, in the 1970s it became more vital to the economy, and the town has continued to grow and prosper since that time. The abandoned ghost towns and mining relics that litter the local hillsides can be seen by anyone traveling the jeep trails interlacing the local mountains.

University of Minnesota Press, 2003. First edition. Hardcover. Like New/Fine . 10x0x8. In The Quiet Hours, Mike Melman records a vanishing era of Minnesota's towns and cities through a series of seventy black-and-white photographs taken from 1985 to 2002. Working in the half-light of predawn hours, Melman brings a new perspective to familiar places, one shaped by his training as an architect and his particular affinity for old buildings. Through his artistic and historic images, Melman exposes the speed at which American cities change and presents a gritty yet contemplative portrait of urban Minnesota.

Description:
Johnson Books, 2006. Softcover. Like New. 6x0x9. The Sioux believed that the art of quilling was brought to a woman in a dream. She in turn taught others how to work with the quills. Each woman used personal and original designs which she received through her own dreams. When European beads became available the traditional designs were carried over into beadwork. Quill and Beadwork of the Western Sioux is the classic work on these important Plains Indian arts, applying to the Cheyennes and Arapahoes as well as to the Sioux. The book is at once a history and a practical, easy to follow manual for people wishing to recreate for themselves objects decorated in an authentic and traditional manner.
