Roma: l'Editore Tommaso Cuccioni. First Edition Presumed. Blindstamped Cloth. . Very Good Plus. N.d., circa 1840. Large paper version: folio, 34 by 24 cm. With 39 hand-colored costume plates, plus engraved title page with hand-colored vignette. These images of Vatican dress, both which cover both ecclessiastic and military costume, are generally encountered in a far smaller, leporello format, with also fewer images -- typically thirty plates. In this other guise, the target audience were the many tourists who paid a visit to Rome and were enamored with a pocket souvenir. The diminutive leporello assuredly exudes enormous charm that has not diminished over nearly two centuries, but the images really do not quite match these original Marroni engravings with their excellent detailing and glorious hand-coloring, and we would stress, the coloring is not only brilliant, but also it would appear not to have lost one bit of lustre from the day it was applied to paper. Folio, 33.5 by 27 cm. xi, [4], 383 pp. Many plates, some with photos on both sides. Photos are of horses, owners, jockeys, races. Other than a tiny spot of lifted leather of spine label (basically a tiny short tear), a beautiful, possibly perfect, copy.

Paris: Pairault & Cie. . Wraps. Fine. Folio, 36.5 by 27 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp., plus wraps. Touching, moralistic canine story of good and bad dog who are friends and their fates. Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC First Search, nor in the BNF when consulting its catalogue.

London: Jones & Co. , 1821-1822. First edition. Full Morocco. Fine. 2 volumes with stunning Zaehnesdorf full red morocco bindings. 8vo. 23.5 by 15 cm. x, 656, ix, 668 pp. With 18 and 12 hand-colored plates, respectively, plus two hand-colored engraved title pages, for a total of 32 hand-colored plates. Abbey 280. A beautiful copy overall -- clean and fresh within, and a gorgeous binding, with a few very minor rub spots, and one tiny abrasion on the rear cover of the second volume.

Wraps. Good. The heavy paper wraps have a watercolor painting of daffodils and the name of the baby, "Geraldine", written neatly at a diagonal to a side of the painting. Within are 17 leaves of content -- pen and ink work only on rectos, and a few of the pages have just the ornamental work, with the space intended for clippings or photos not used. The cover measures 25 by 17.5 cm, the interior pages, 20 ny 16.5 cm.

Palamos, Gerona, Spain, 1888. NA. Fine. 48 instruction cards, each with about ten color chromolithographic vignette illustrations of Spanish words beginning with the particular letter or letter combination. In original paper wrapper, unopened. Scarce, with only insitutional copy appearing on OCLC First Search at the Biblioteca National de Espana, and this might be a reprint. Wrapper with tears. Paris: Chez Saintin, Libraire de la Cour, 1823. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo. 133 by 112 mm. ii, 128 pp. Sixteen plates, thirteen of which are hand-colored, and each of these thirteen have two images. Comparatively scarce, with four copies showing up on OCLC First Search (three of an 1813 edition), and none of these copies appear to have hand-coloring going on. Other than frontis which depicts a boy painting a girl standing as his model, all the hand-colored illustrations are of animals, and the text describes these animals, with some emphasis placed on aspects of relevance to the artist. The final three plates, all non-colored, concern human characteristics. Original pink cartonnage binding, with silk corners, possibly later, and later blank endpapers. Gilt spine title with some rubbing. Scattered light foxing. Light wear overall.

1837. Full Morocco. Very Good. Eleven exquisite, highly detailed watercolors of battle scenes, landscapes, waterfronts, etc. 12mo. 16 by 10 cm. 48 leaves, writing on virtually all rectos and versos. Specifically, the watercolors include a portrait of Napoleon, a bucolic landscape with a seraph, a sheperdess in a bucolic setting, a ship in a coastal seascape, a panorama of a botanical garden at Avranche, a hilly panorama, a view of St. St.-Michel, the battles of Waterloo, Montreau and Arcole, a bouquet of flowers. In addition, there are decorative devices, most notably on the title page, and every page is framed by an unique ornamental band. The poetry, all presumably by Caillon, is written in a neat, cursive calligraphic hand. A common thread running through the writing is Normandy and the war, and Caillon pays homage to the former Emperor. Mainly, though, this is a manuscript of extraordinary phyiscal beauty.

Bound handsomely by Bernasconi, with ornate gilt (and green) decoration in spine compartments -- decorative features include feathering and a green clover center element. N.d., circa 1778. 8vo. 23 by 15 cm. Unpaginated, 37 leaves, with printing on one side only of the leaves. With 92 hand-colored illustrations on 36 of the pages. Following title page, first part, comprised of 24 pages, features 48 illustrations of women with quintessential hairdos of their day, culminating in the outlandish and over-the-top concoctions of the 18th century. There are four framed boxes per page, two with illustrations, two, with the textual description of the corresponding illustration. Peru, IN: W.C. Redmon, Sons & Co., 1940. Wraps. Spiral. . Very Good Plus. Lovely trade catalogue with metallic color illustrations of hampers and baskets of a wide variety. 4to. 29 by 22.5 cm. Unpaginated, 15 leaves (30 pp.) With two copies of four page price list also bound in the spiral. The cove has a faux wood finish with stripes of a metallic silver green as backdrop for the title and other lettering. In the center is a profile bust of an Indian, the company insignia and a play on its name of "Redmon". It is the metallic quality of the silver and other colors that distinguishes this trade catalogue and make it of interest as a printed object in and of itself, beyond what might seem the mundane things it is featuring. The fancy fruit and Easter baskets stand out for the combination of colorized photos of fruits within the colorful assortment of baskets. Berlin: R. Wagner. Cloth. Very Good. 16.5 . Folio sized, measuring 16.5 by 13.5 inches, or 42 by 35 cm. Poetry surrounded by pretty floral and natural decoration one finds in illuminated manuscript. Most outstanding is the plate with a garlanded bouquet of wildflowers and birds that frame Goethe verse. Other poets include Longfellow, Uhland, Franz Kugler, Freiligrath, Ruckert. The card stock has a brittleness evident by the hinge; otherwise, plates are clean. Original front cloth appears to have been carefully laid on later cloth boards.

Cloth portfolio. Very Good. Fabulous Regency fashion, including its affinity for the exotic, shown in seven overlay metamorphics. N.d., circa 1816. (Based on paper watermark of that date. Thus these were executed then or shortly afterward, as fashions shown are very much of the Regency period.) The base leaf is 16.5 by 13.5 cm. The overlays are captioned: "Turkish Dress", "Spanish Dress", "Winter Dress", "Virgin of the Sun", "Ball Dress", "Shepherdess", and "Queen's Dress". The overlays a variable in size, and they have to be, and moved just so to fit correctly with the base head. One of the overlays has a small amount of tissue reinforcement. The group is housed in a modern custom cloth portfolio, with flaps to hold the paper in and a ribbon tie to seal the portfolio.
