Quarterbound tan cloth covered boards, with vellum to the spine. Title, author, date (1894) and publisher's design in gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Clean inside; binding is solid and square. Some wear to extremities, including small spots of wear through to boards at corners, and 1/4" closed tear to vellum at top of spine. Scattered small spots and smudges, a couple small spots of green (ink?) at top of rear board. 139 pages, includes 44 full page B&W plates, index, and section on Madonnas incorrectly ascribed to Raphael. Each piece is accompanied by a page of text describing the physical characteristics (height, width, material, subject, etc), history and provenance including current owner, existence and location of known copies, and with critical citations.
