The binding is in very good condition. It has a part impressed picture to the front board and part impressed gilt titles to the spine. The boards have beveled edges. There is some pulling to the spine and some edge wear. It is clean apart from a little marking to the back board. Internally it looks like the endpapers are much newer as they are plain and unmarked. Contents sound and generally clean. There is the odd mark and around 5 small repaired… Read More

Description:
London: J Marshall & Co An exceptionally rare early copy of this scarce story for children. Undated but circa 1788. First published in 1781, there is only one copy of the first edition noted. This copy is classed as 'fair' because there is wear to the binding; there is stain to the page edges and side margin; and the frontispiece is supplied in facsimile (although, worryingly, it is not that easy to tell). In the original dutch floral boards with a new matching cloth spine, and cloth case for preservation. There is a signature - Miss C Darell August 1789 to the front pastedown. New free endpapers. Engraved title page states that the book was priced at 6d in gift paper, 9d bound in Red. With 31 woodcuts in the text (in addition to the frontispiece) - the woodcut on p74 shows Lady Worthy weeping - further evidence that this is a very early edition. 88 pp plus 4 pp of advertisements at the rear and an advert for the Juvenile Magazine on the rear pastedown. Other than the stain mentioned… Read More

Description:
Utrecht: Petrum Elzevirium, 1668 A good early edition of this important work on Scottish history, first published in 1582. George Buchanan was a renowned 16th century scholar who, among many other appointments, tutored both the young Mary Queen of Scots and James VI. This is the first history of Scotland written by a Scot and is notable, particularly for the accounts from his own lifetime. It is in Latin - a language that he was so at ease with that he has been called the greatest writer in Latin of the 16th century. This copy is in a possibly contemporary full leather binding with raised bands, blind-stamped designs and title label to spine. The binding is worn, particularly at the spine joints, top and bottom of the spine, corners and edges. There is a bookplate of George Govan Esq to the front pastedown and possibly contemporary scholarly notes to the reverse of the fep and the initial blank. With title page in red and black; introductions and page of dedications 68pp; history pp 1-750; index 38pp;… Read More

Description:
London and New York: William Heinemann and Doubleday, Page & Co, 1928 A fair copy in the original grey decorative cloth binding with designs and 34 tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Rackham. The binding has been rebacked - relaying the original spine and endpapers, so it is nice and tight. There is some bumping to the front top corner and the back board corners. The binding is very clean with some fading and browning to the spine. The original decorative endpapers are free of inscriptions - there is a little grubbiness - the back free endpaper has had a sheet of music pasted to the reverse - the music contains the motifs to Siegfried, the ring and other relevant sections. There is an ink inscription to a preliminary 'To Elizabeth for her "seventeenth" birthday - from Daddy and Mummie with our best love 19 Aug'. There is some spotting to preliminaries and the text pages have a brown tint especially to edges. This book is classed as 'fair' and priced cheaply because there… Read More
