Description:
Garland Publishing Inc., New York, revised and enlarged edition, 1980. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm,. xxxvi, 146 pp, ills, facs. From the preface: "The present edition, which has essentially the status of a new work, emerged from a limited, privately printed edition, which was not for sale and was sparsely distributed. Errors in that edition have been corrected, entries have been added, works about Hodgson have been annotated, sections have been rearranged according to date, and the index has been expanded…What I have attempted in the annotations, therefore, is to provide, without becoming too repetitive, a useful cross section of information, both biographical and critical, as a means to establishing an accurate account of the man and his work. Consequently, I have occasionally annotated anthologies and book reviews wherever the commentary contributed to the overall plan of providing unique information or points of view. Very Good.

From the blurb: "During his short life Randolph Caldecott became one of the most popular and respected illustrators of his era. Working at the height of Victorian Aestheticism and industrialisation, be turned for inspiration to nature and the stable rural society of eighteenth-century England. ...Rodney Engen charts Caldecott's life from his humble beginnings in a small village and his early life as a bank clerk. His talent soon brought him commissions from the Graphic, Illustrated London News and The Pictorial World and he was a regular contributor to these and other periodicals throughout his career. Caldecott's most important contribution to English illustration, however, was his famous series of children's Picture Books, superb editions of illustrated nursery rhymes and stories, engraved and colour-printed by that master of his trade, Edmund Evans.
