Description:
A collection of photographs, made and compiled by Thomas William George Eady, flying officer in the no. 28 squadron of the British Royal Air Force. The squadron was at that moment based at Risalpur, an aerodrome near Peshawar in Northern Pakistan. The collection contains silver-gelatin prints, photographic snapshots and aerial reconnaissance photographs he made in 1929-1930, during his stay in the North West Frontier region on the India-Pakistan border. They show the men in their daily activities and the places they visited in their leisure, such as a music saloon in Narkunda and Eady’s family(?) while staying at "Uncle Joey" in Madras. It further includes many views of the region, especially of Attock and Risalpur, but also of Bombay, Madras, The Malakand Pass, Bara Valley, snow at Drosh, etc., and shows glimpses of Indian culture. The collection therefore gives many insights into the life of a British Royal Air Force officer in the Indian North West Frontier. Also interesting are the five related… Read More

Description:
[1] leaf.An Antwerp notarial declaration made voluntarily by Giovan Carlo Affaitati, also known as Johannes Carolus de Affaytadi (Cremona 1500 or 1510-Lier 1555 or Ghistelle 1587) soon after he moved to Antwerp, on behalf of Guido de Crema, citizen of Mantua, and Raphael Brumani, citizen of Cremona. It was drawn up before the Antwerp notary Anthony Amala and three named witnesses and appears to concern De Crema and Brumani's inheritance. Affaitati testified to the content of a document drawn up on 31 December 1545 before the Mantua notary Hieronimus de Zizolis. Affitati came from a merchant banking family in Cremona. He set up in Lisbon but moved to Antwerp in 1545, when the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V made him Baron of Ghistelle. He was active in the spice trade and is said to have been the most important financier of the wars of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain.Formerly folded to a smaller size, leaving traces of the old folds, but still in very good condition. [1], [1 blank], [2], VII, [1 blank], 109, [1 blank] pp.First edition of this travel account of Fatalla Sayeghir, who was a young Arab working as interpreter and assistant to a Napoleonic spy, M[onsieur?]. de Lascaris, who undertook an extended mission amongst the Arab peoples. De Lascaris was born in Piedmont, Italy, most likely in the last quarter of the 18th century and was a knight on Malta when Napoleon captured the island in 1798 and he subsequently followed Napoleon to Egypt. According to the translator and compiler of the work Alphonse de Lamartine, De Lascaris was bright and thus was able to capture Napoleon's attention. Together, they set their sights on conquering Asia, which would as an addition to Napoleon's Empire render more glory. De Lascaris was essentially appointed as Napoleon's spy, received secret instructions and the necessary funds in order to examine how they could go about conquering parts of Western Asia and even to trace out a road to India. Description:
7, 7 engraved ll.Two rare print series (part 2 especially rare) showing beautiful, rich and decorative designs for fountains by François Boucher (1703-1770), famous French painter and decorative draughtsman, professor and later director of the Paris Academy, inspector of the Gobelin manufacture at Paris, and "premier peintre du Roi". The present two series show some of his best work, richly decorative forms in an early rococo style, incorporating (mostly wingless) putti, naked water nymphs (naiads), merfolk, a satyr, Neptune in his seahorse-drawn chariot, other water gods and godesses, shells, dolphins, sea monsters, a swan and other animals. Some were actually built: the Neptune print may have inspired Barthélemy Guibal's 1750 Fontaine de Neptune at the Place Royale in Nancy. Extra inserted: 18th century engraved copy of plate 6 of the first series, showing a rich design with two Tritons blowing shell trumpets, unsigned. From the Library of Jean Fürstenberg (1890-1982), co-founder of the… Read More

Description:
XI, [1 blank], 449, [1]; [4], 198; [4], 287, [1] pp.First and only edition, rarely seen on the market, of a highly acclaimed and richly illustrated collection of writings on aerial photography and photogrammetry, by a pioneer in the field. From the 1840s onward, Laussedat, an engineer in the French Army, had experimented with the possibilities provided by lenses for accurate mapping. With the help of a camera lucida, he produced a topographic map in 1850. Laussedat realised the possibilities which photography provided, but also knew that existing cameras were not suitable for mapping purposes "due to their narrow fields of view and lack of calibrated orientation. He therefore commissioned the Paris instrument maker Brunner to construct a camera to his specifications in 1859. ... The first topographic map was produced in 1861" (Hannavy). Six years later he presented the first map compiled from a stereographic aerial image. In the first volume of his Recherches, Laussedat gives an extensive description… Read More

[4], XLIV, 256, [16], 38, [2 blank] pp.Hans Bernhard Merian's French translation of Michaelis's Fragen an eine Gesellschaft gelehrter Männer (1762), prepared during the early stages of Carsten Niebuhr's Danish expedition to the Middle East. It is the first edition in any language to be printed in the Netherlands. Johann David Michaelis, a famed German Orientalist and theologian, was one of the scholars who prompted the important Danish expedition to Egypt, Arabia and Syria (1761-1767), led by Carsten Niebuhr. Michaelis hoped to investigate the relationship of the southern Arabic dialects to Hebrew, and to verify obscure botanical and zoological information in the Bible. For this purpose he composed the present 100 "questions". It includes the instructions for the expedition by Frederick V of Denmark, a 35-page account of Yemen and an extract of Carsten Niebuhr's account of Arabia (not included in the first French edition of 1763). Description:
468 pp.One of the earliest (fourth?) and rarest editions, with a false imprint (but probably the second edition by the original publisher), of an infamous collection of memoires or reputed memoires from the reign of King Henri III of France, and an uncommonly ferocious satire of the manners and mores of the court and especially of Henri III and his mother Catherine de Medici, including rather sordid details. Jean Elzevier in Leiden produced the first edition in 1660, using for the first time the false imprint “Cologne, Pierre Marteau” to hide his own identity and that of the author(s) of this “chronique scandaleuse”. This and the other editions discussed here are in 12mo format and the others copy “Cologne” and “Pierre Marteau” from the false imprint of the first edition. The present edition is not in Willems or Rahir and we have located only 7 other copies, rarer than the other 1662 “Marteau” edition. Some of the references listed below give insufficient detail to distinguish the two.In… Read More
