Description:
West Smethwick n.d. [c1912]. 204x90mm. 8pp text and two colour photographs of examples of Ruskin pottery. Loosely inserted are six black and white photographs, each with three pieces of pottery. The numbers underneath each piece indicate that these are photographs to be used in sale catalogues. The pamphlet is in the original grey-green card wrappers. Two blue ink stains to upper cover of pamphlet and one of the separate photographs has a scuff to the bottom edge but otherwise in very good condition. It is rare: we have been unable to trace a Ruskin pamphlet answering to this description in the library databases and only one copy appears in the auction records. The pamphlet begins with the statement on the title page that the Flambe pieces made by the Ruskin Pottery "have the qualities of some of the finest specimens of Chinese Pottery. Each piece is unique". Press notices and an interesting explanation of the manufacturing methods form the rest of this short pamphlet written by W. Howson Taylor who…

Description:
London: Printed for the Author, and are to be sold by Walter Davis in Amen Corner 1682, 1682. First edition. 8vo (175x114mm). pp. 128 (including initial blank A1). Contemporary black morocco, covers panelled in gilt, spine richly gilt in compartments, marbled pastedowns, all edges gilt. The Heber - Britwell - Hayward - Bradley Martin - Edwards copy, with modern bookplates of H. Bradley Martin and J.O. Edwards. Lightly rubbed with some wear to corners, a little marginal browning, still an excellent copy. Alexander Radcliffe trained in law but deserted his studies to become a soldier, reaching the rank of captain before turning to writing bawdy verse in the tradition of the poetic rake established by the 1680 edition of Rochester's Poems on Several Occasions. The title poem here, Radcliffe's best known work, starts with a knock at the door which the author is in bed with a whore. He embarks on a nightmarish low-life ramble through Restoration London, visiting theatres, gambling dens and…

Description:
London: Bradbury & Evans 1863-65, 1863. Eight pamphlets under three titles. Privately printed by M.P.W. Boulton between 1863 and 1865, the three titles concern a dispute about the origins and invention of photography and are a refutation by Boulton of claims made in 1863 by F.P. Smith. Further details of this are given below. Each title has more than one version. Boulton issued each pamphlet and then added further notes to it to build up his argument. This means that each title has a final complete form but these represent an expanded version of the first issued pamphlet. The final form of each title is here in this collection of eight different versions of the three works (items 2,6 and 8 below) but we can see from the other pamphlets how, and at what point, Boulton introduces new evidence and develops further strands in his detailed discussion. There is an overlap between the variants within each title but no two pamphlets are exactly the same. All of these pamphlets are rare institutionally and…

London: Elkin Mathews at the sign of the Bodley Head 1891, 1891. Limited edition, number six of twenty-five copies printed for sale in England on Japanese Vellum. Signed by Walter Crane. 8vo. pp. xiii, 162, [5]. Loose gatherings, unbound in a slipcase of blue card with parchment spine gilt stamped with title, author and date. Thirty-nine illustrations by Crane engraved by Arthur Leverett, Emery Walker and W. Boutall. The gatherings are in fine condition. The slip case shows some markings and tears and has been repaired in places. Overall, this is a very good example of a scarce edition. There are several limited editions of this work published by Elkin Mathews but this is generally reckoned to be the finest and most rare. As a contemporary reviewer wrote, "The little volume does both author and publisher credit for the tasteful style in which it is produced".

Description:
Marburg: Marburger Tapetenfabrik J.B. Schaefer & Co, 1972 1972, 1972. Roll of wallpaper comprising 14½ identical, repeated coloured screenprint on silver metallic paper, with full margins. Approx. 8220 x 535 mm (323 ½ x 21 in). This image (also known as Right Hand Woman) was designed by Jones in 1970. It was made as a roll of wallpaper in 1972 by one of the oldest wallpaper factories in Germany in the series X Art Wall Collection. Other artists participating in this extraordinary project included Jean Tinguely, Otmar Alt and Eric Stanton. A single panel sold at Christies in 2008 for £525 and a complete roll would appear to be a scarce item. On its own, this is a striking image. Multiplied fourteen times, it is the stuff of nightmares or dreams. It is impossible to deny that this print is controversial, politically incorrect and sexist. But, whether we like it or not, that is the point for Jones. "It's collateral damage", he said, "I wanted to offend the canons of accepted worth in art. I found the…

Description:
West Smethwick 1933, 1933. A Ruskin single-handed vase with a wide-flared neck decorated with a high fired sang-de-bœuf and mottled green and white glaze with specks of green and black. 200mm high, 115mm wide at opening. Base is marked "Ruskin. 1933. England". A beautiful example of the distinctive Ruskin High Fired Flambé process in one of the most striking colours used by the pottery. As William Howson Taylor explained in his 1912 booklet on Ruskin Pottery (see previous item), the aims of the Pottery were "good potting, beauty of form, and rich or tender colouring". "The colourings range from slightly broken colours, through gradations of two colours to textures and patternings rivalling cloisonné enamels and suggestive of the rich hues seen in rock pools at low tide". He describes the "real Flambé colours, each piece being unique and unrepeatable. The colourings, textures and patternings of this real Flambé are as varied as is the number of individual pieces, and they include sang de bœuf,…
